Life

After that, he concentrated exclusively on painting. From 1986 until the fall of the Berlin Wall , he spent several months a year on the island of Hiddensee . Because of the departure from the "predetermined academic path", the state authorities of the GDR declared him an undesirable person and terminated his apartment and work space. In 1988 he was approved as a painter and graphic artist by the Association of Visual Artists; since then he has been working as a freelancer. In September 1989 Schlüter became involved in the citizens' movement Neues Forum .

He has had his studio in Berlin-Mitte since 2003 , and a studio house on Hiddensee since 2012. Torsten Schlüter is married, has three children and lives in Berlin and on Hiddensee.

plant

In addition to painting, literary work also plays a special role. Correspondence with Erwin Strittmatter and an intensive exchange with Manfred Domrös (Hiddenseer Inselpastor) and Hanns Dieter Hüsch gave further suggestions. From 1990 he went on various work trips, including a. to France, Guatemala, Mexico, New York, Namibia, Indonesia and India. In 1993 Torsten Schlüter belonged to the group of visual artists who brought the Kulturbrauerei to life. In 1996 he had a studio in the Hackesche Höfe in Berlin.

In 1997 he published his first literary publication, "Hiddenseer Aufzüge". In various project-related work he cooperated a. a. with the musicians Christoph Theusner , Bob Rutman , Peter Ablinger and Michael von Hintzenstern as well as the directors Fritz Bennewitz , Peter Schroth and Ralf Peter Schulze.

Awards

In 2013 Schlüter received an award at the 19th art exhibition "Natur-Mensch" in the Harz National Park.

Work topics

Between 1986 and 1989 there was a confrontation with social issues u. a. in the context of the GDR . Examples of this are his pictures “The Unity Party” and “The October Storm” (1989) as well as the portraits from the cycle of witches (portraits of women) and heretics (self-portraits). From 1987 he developed an abstract landscape painting (watercolor), influenced by the northern light of Hiddensee. As a result, cycles such as northern lights , horizons and weather times emerged . After 1990, the sketchbooks brought back from work trips served as the basis for large-format oil paintings. Since 1997 the theme of “water” has been dominant in his work, conveyed by the archaic well women and water carriers . In 1994, work began in New York on the subject of bridges and traffic in metropolises (Berlin / Manhattan) and in 1995 the cockfight topic . With Tulipamwe , Schlüter created a multi-layered cycle of painting, sculpture, film and performance on fundamental issues of dealing with and coexistence of different cultures using the example of the development of Namibia in 1997 . In 1999 Tulipamwe was shown as part of the “European Capital of Culture Weimar” and in 1998 on the initiative of Jack Lang and Antoine Favron in Blois, France. In the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s he dealt with issues such as environmental issues , social violence and exclusion . Exemplary works are: Triptych "The Violence" (1992), "Slumdog, Craw and Man" (1996), "Farewell to Europe" (1998), "Street Kids in Mumbai" (1998), "Sea of Flags" (2008), "Fukushima" (2013), "Geminus" / "VW folded up" (2015).
