Nestler's theme is the energy of form; In his work he often stages a fragile play of forces using iron bars, joints, hinges or, for example, he balances massive blocks. “For Nestler, plastic is also a very personal, yes, intimate form of expressing one's own need for harmony - in order to find an external balance that comes to an internal balance. Every sculpture is centered in this contemplation on the balance beam. ” Similarly, representatives of modern sculpture such as Richard Serra , George Rickey , Alf Schuler and Klaus Rinke give their own interpretations of physicality . Nestler also creates voluminous and lightweight works from expanded polystyrene and foam, but his preferred means of expression are iron and steel, which he works by forging, welding, casting and cutting. On the surface, the result often looks simple and beautiful, but which meets an intellectual claim "in which abstract thinking, technical precision and natural law conditions artfully come together."

photography

In his photograms, which he has been making since 1967, everyday things such as gutters, sliding grids, etc. Ä. a value that goes beyond what is appropriate. In addition, there are images from nature, such as the Caspian Forest , which were created during an excursion and show this previously untouched piece of earth with rare plants and trees in such a way that nature appears at the same time as erected architecture. In addition, it is reminiscent of the structures of the human lungs and is a reference to the lungs of nature.

drawings

Nestler often depicts landscapes or plants in his drawings. They are therefore mostly representational and thus also refer to the models that lead to the non-representational sculptures.
