The Böttcherstraße Art Prize in Bremen is one of the most traditional and at the same time most important awards for contemporary art in Germany. It was first awarded in 1954. Every two years, ten curators independently nominate one artist each from the German-speaking region, whose positions will be presented in a competition exhibition at the Kunsthalle Bremen . On the basis of the exhibition, an international jury of five will determine the winner during the exhibition.

The prize, endowed with 30,000 euros, is sponsored by the group of donors of the Kunstverein in Bremen . The group of donors also enables the purchase of a work by the respective award winner. The collection of the Kunsthalle Bremen was expanded to include works by Martin Honert , Ólafur Elíasson , Wolfgang Tillmans , Tino Sehgal , Ulla von Brandenburg and Thea Djordjadze , among others . In the past, there were numerous names among the award winners and the proposed artists who received great attention in the international art scene in the following years. These include, for example, Wolfgang Tillmans and Tomma Abts , who were later awarded the Turner Prize, and Dirk Skreber , who received the National Gallery Prize for Young Art .

Bremen Art Prize and Art Prize of Böttcherstraße in Bremen

The Bremen Art Prize (1985–1991) and the Böttcherstrasse Art Prize in Bremen (since 1993) have been sponsored by the group of donors for the Böttcherstrasse Art Prize in Bremen since 1985. The group of donors was founded in 1985 by members of the art association in Bremen as the recipient of the art prize. The association forms an independent, non-legal association within the art association.

The aim of the circle is to establish an art prize from Böttcherstraße in Bremen, through which artists living in the German-speaking area are to be honored every two years: artists who have not yet received public recognition according to the quality of their works. A certain artistic direction is not decisive.

The group of founders appoints a ten-person proposal committee, of which the group of founders is also a member. Each member of this commission nominates one artist for the group exhibition that takes place every two years. At the end of the exhibition, the members of the jury (who are not allowed to be members of the proposal committee) determine the winner. The Bremen Art Prize and the Böttcherstrasse Art Prize in Bremen are the successors to the Böttcherstrasse art prize awarded between 1954 and 1983 .

History of the founding of the Böttcherstraße Art Prize (1954–1983)

The Böttcherstraße Art Prize was donated by HAG AG in Bremen with a certificate dated October 6, 1954 . The prize was initially endowed with DM 5,000 and was increased to DM 10,000 in 1972 and to DM 15,000 in 1977. The prize was awarded annually to German visual artists.

The intention was not to honor an already existing oeuvre, but rather the award should serve to promote the next generation of artists. The nominations for the candidates initially came from among the jury members, who then nominated the winner. This procedure was later changed by the creation of a proposal committee so that the group of candidates was formed independently of the jury. This resulted in a largely neutrality in the choice of candidates.

After HAG AG was taken over and incorporated into the international General Foods group (today Mondelēz International ) in 1979, the art prize and its exhibition costs were financially supported by HAG AG until 1982. In 1981, however, HAG AG separated from Böttcherstraße GmbH and Böttcherstraße became family property. The Böttcherstrasse Art Prize was awarded for the last time in 1983.

In order to be able to continue to award the prize, an association of members was founded within the Kunstverein in Bremen who, as donors, take on the financing and organization of the prize. With the new sponsor, the art prize was renamed the Bremen Art Prize in 1985 and the Böttcherstraße Art Prize in Bremen in 1993 .
