Life

Daniel Knorr's parents fled as tourists from Romania to Germany in 1982, nine months later Daniel, then 14, was allowed to join them. He graduated from high school in Weiden in the Upper Palatinate , after which he studied under Olaf Metzel at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . In 1994 he first drew attention to himself in Munich with his installation Powder . The exhibition visitors were able to walk over half a kilo of cocaine, which was enclosed in armored glass. With a DAAD scholarship, Knorr then went to the USA to the Vermont College of Fine Arts and then from 1995 to 1997 to New York. In 1998 he then settled in Berlin.

Daniel Knorr created a versatile work. In 2005 he was allowed to design the Romanian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale . He caused a stir by leaving the rooms - under the name European Influenza - completely empty. For the Mumok in Vienna he hired Marie Antoinette and Ludwig XVI. as scarecrows. He provides equestrian statues with hats, sets up begging robots in public space, builds a smoking cabin in the middle of an exhibition and hangs up casts of all colors of uneven streets as wall sculptures. Knorr is also known for his matryoshka figures in different sizes. In addition to his artistic work, Knorr was visiting professor at the Saar College of Fine Arts .

Rauch installation "Expiration Movement" at the Zwehrenturm

From the Zwehrenturm , white smoke rose over Kassel for 10 hours every day and for 163 days. With this project, Spiegel Online assumed , Knorr would become one of the most famous artists of the 14th Documenta. They were pressed into books with a fifty-ton press that could be purchased by the Documenta audience.
