Rudolf Kügler (born September 27, 1921 in Berlin ; † October 8, 2013 in Berlin-Frohnau ) was a German painter and graphic artist . He was an important representative of German abstract art after the Second World War .

life and work

Rudolf Kügler studied in 1946/47 at the University of Applied Arts in Berlin-Weißensee with Hans Speidel , then until 1954 at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin with Professor Max Kaus . He completed his studies as a master class student. In 1950 he moved from the east to the west of Berlin. He received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation . He went on numerous study trips to Spain , Morocco , Egypt , Greece and Norway , in addition to longer stays in Paris and Rome. In 1956, Rudolf Kügler was appointed professor at the Berlin University of Fine Arts, initially for the email class. Then he took over the free painting class. In addition to teaching, several architectural projects and wall designs.

In addition to drawings, paintings and large-format enamel works, he also works in watercolors, screen printing, sculpture and collage. With his abstract graphic work he took part in numerous international exhibitions in the 1950s, in 1959 at Documenta 2 in Kassel. Working with wood was also important to the son of a carpenter. Whether wood scraps from a nearby carpenter's workshop, whether flotsam from the Mediterranean beach, but also thickly pasted billboards in Berlin, Madrid, Munich or Palma, lead to new approaches to work. His collages of abstract, often three-dimensional temples have earned him the reputation of being a “master of collage” (Heidelberg HS Gallery).

After his retirement in 1986 he prepared the publication of his drawings and works on paper 1950–1990 with travel memories and texts and worked on a multi-volume catalog of works. His works are in public and private collections around the world. Rudolf Kügler was a member of the German Association of Artists . He lived as a freelance artist in Berlin.
