Michael Schoenholtz (born April 8, 1937 in Duisburg , † September 30, 2019 in Berlin ) was a German sculptor .

Life

Michael Schoenholtz was born in Duisburg in April 1937. His mother was a Germanist, his father a musician. He received a musical education very early on. After graduating from high school, he studied German language and literature and art history at the University of Cologne from 1956, and from 1957 at the Berlin University of the Arts , where he was a master student of Ludwig Gabriel Schrieber in 1962/63 . Since 1971 Schoenholtz himself taught as a professor at the Hochschule (since 2001: Universität) der Künste, where he succeeded Schrieber in 1975. Schoenholtz had been a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts since 1996, and from 1997 to 2003 as director of the visual arts section. In 2005 he retired.

Schoenholtz was a member of the German Association of Artists , of which he was elected first chairman in 1998 for two years. He lived and worked in Berlin and was married to the painter Barbara Keidel; the marriage resulted in a daughter.

Schoenholtz was mainly active as a stone sculptor, who carried out his work in a simple, reduced formal language based on large-format charcoal drawings. His best-known works include sculptures in the crypt he designed in the Frauenkirche Dresden (1999–2005). Sculptures by Michael Schoenholtz can be seen in public spaces in Heilbronn, Nordhorn , Soest and above all in Berlin. In 1966 he took part in the first sculpture symposium in Hořice in the Czech Republic .
