history

In the 19th century, Hořice was a town with a rich stone carving tradition and at the end of 1883 (training began in 1884) a school for stone carvers , stone masons and stone sculptors was established in this place under the direction of Vilém Dokoupil , as there were numerous stone quarries in the area with Cretaceous times Sandstones were extracted and also processed. Even today (2010) this stonemason and stone carving school in Hořice trains young people.

Symposium 1966

A sculpture symposium has been held in Hořice since 1966, which goes back to the sculpture symposium St. Margarethen near St. Margarethen in Burgenland in Austria , first held in 1959 by the sculptor Karl Prantl . One of the participants in the first symposium in 1959 was Janez Lenassi , who in 1961 co-founded the sculpture symposium Forma Viva in Slovenia , then Yugoslavia . Lenassi belonged to the group of the first sculpture symposium in Hořice in 1961.

The sculptors who take part in the symposium work their sculptures out of the locally available sandstone and these sculptures were placed on the hill of St. Gotthard , where there are now 86 works that show the development of sculpture. Parts of the sculpture park are also part of the Gallery of Statues , which was built in 1908. The park is connected to Bedřich Smetana Park, which was built in 1903 and contains a collection of Czech sculptures from the first half of the 20th century. The sculptures that have been created on the occasion of the symposia since 2002 will be permanently installed in the newly established Park II Sculpture Park , which is located in the landscape at the northeastern end of Hořice; previously they were exhibited in Hradec Králové for a year.
