history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1143 in the deed of foundation of the Strahov Monastery . In 1365 the place was raised to the market and since 1385 Hořice had a town seal. In 1423, during the Hussite Wars, the battle of Horschitz took place south of the city , in which the allied Orebites and Kalixtines defeated a Catholic army.
In the 15th century the Smiřický von Smiřice acquired the town, which gained importance until the Thirty Years War. For the year 1524, three Jews in Horschitz are recorded in the Bohemian court leaning table. When the Smiřický von Smiřice were confiscated after the Battle of White Mountain , Albrecht von Waldstein took them over. Confiscated again after his death, the rule was handed over to Jakob Strozzi in 1635 . After his son Peter died in 1664 without any descendants, his widow donated the income from the estate to war invalids. With a foundation she also laid the foundation for the construction of the Invalidenhaus in Carolinenthal, which began in 1731, and later another in Horschitz. In 1846 a fire destroyed large parts of the city.
After the replacement of patrimonial Horschitz became an independent town in 1850 and the seat of a district administration and a district court. In 1884 the sculpture school was founded. In 1925 an outdoor swimming pool was opened. In 1960 the Okres Hořice was dissolved and the city was incorporated into the Okres Jičín. The economic focus is on the textile industry and mechanical engineering. The sandstone crusher, which helped the city to gain national fame, is no longer operated in the city today. Since 1961 the motorcycle race "300 zatáček" has been held in the town and its surroundings, which has had an international character since 1968 and has been called "300 zatáček - Gustav Havel" since then.
