Kopidlno (dt. Outdated: Copidlen , also Kopidelau ) is a city in the Czech Republic . It is located 13 kilometers southwest of Jičín and belongs to the Okres Jičín .

geography

Kopidlno is located on both sides of the Mrlina River , which feeds the castle ponds east of the town.

Neighboring towns are Bílsko in the north, Pševes and Labouň in the northeast, Vršce in the east, Cholenice in the southeast, Budčeves in the south, Mlýnec in the southwest, Kamensko and Křešice in the west and Ledkov in the northwest.

history

Kopidlno was first mentioned in 1322 as the property of Peter Kopidlanský. Around 1341 Boček Kopidlanský had a second fortress built next to the old (upper) fortress. A parish school has been handed down since 1361. Kopidlno has been known as a town since the 14th century. The Kopidlanský von Kopidlno were followers of the teachings of Jan Hus and supported Georg von Podiebrad in his election as king. In 1514, Vladislav II gave Kopidlno city ​​rights. Under his successor Ludwig , the city received a coat of arms in 1523. In 1527 Wenzel Haugwitz von Biskupitz acquired the city. He had the new fortress converted into a Renaissance castle and gave up the upper fortress. 1559 followed Christoph Robenhaupt von Sucha (Robmhap ze Suché) as the owner of Kopidlno. 1606 acquired in January Rudolf Trčka of Lípa as a creditor of Balthazar robes main Sucha Kopidlno and after the Battle of White Mountain received Albrecht of Wallenstein in 1624 the goods. After his murder, Siegmund Ludwig von Dietrichstein followed in 1634 . In 1638 he exchanged Kopidlno with Heinrich Graf Schlick . In 1667 the school burned down. Under Franz Ernst Graf Schlick, the dominions Kopidlno and Altenburg were merged into one family estate. After his death, an inheritance dispute broke out, which was settled in 1757. In 1843 there were 1235 people in Kopidlno. After the abolition of patrimonial Kopidlno became an independent town in 1848.

In 1906, the lord of the castle, Erwin Graf Schlick, died without heirs. The castle was acquired by the Weißenwolf family, from whom their daughter Henriette von Thurn und Taxis inherited it. In 1930 the city had 2,182 inhabitants. The narrow-gauge railway Kopidlno - Češov was closed.

Personalities

  • František Matěj Hilmar (1803-1881); the composer and educator lived in the city, he created the first polka, the notes of which appeared in print.
  • František Alois Vacek (1779-1854); the theologian and writer was a chaplain in Kopidlno.
  • Josef Anton Steffan (1726–1797), composer, court pianist and piano teacher for Maria Theresa's children
  • Anna Honzáková (1875-1940); the medicin was the first woman to graduate from the medical faculty of Charles University.
