Veliš (German Welisch ) is a municipality in the Czech Republic . It is located six kilometers southwest of Jičín at the southern foot of the Veliš Mountain and belongs to the Okres Jičín .
history

Veliš was first mentioned in 1140 in a founding document of the Strahov Monastery . The royal castle , built around 1300 on a hill above the village, is documented for 1316. In 1327, the Lords of Wartenberg acquired the Veliš estate, initially as a pledge and ten years later as hereditary property. Hašek von Waldstein is documented as the owner for 1438 , from whom it was acquired by the future Bohemian King George of Podebrady in 1452 . In 1482 Samuel von Hradek and Valečov bought it from his sons, who were followed by the Trčka von Leipa . Jan Rudolf Trčka von Lípa sold Veliš in 1606 to Matthias von Thurn , who was expropriated after the battle of the White Mountain . Subsequently it came to Albrecht von Wallenstein , after his murder in 1634 to Heinrich von Schlick , whom his son Franz Ernst inherited in 1650.
A basalt quarry was of economic importance in the 19th century .
