Nová Paka (German: Neupaka ) is a city in the Czech Republic . It is located 22 kilometers northeast of Jičín and belongs to the Okres Jičín .

history

Nová Paka belonged to the Kumburk rule and was first mentioned in 1357 when a new priest was ordained for the St. Nicholas Church. At that time it was already known as the city of "Paka Mladá" ( Jungpaka ). In 1563 large parts were destroyed by fire. In 1586, a plague epidemic raged, which is said to have killed half of the city's population. Another 450 people died in the plague epidemic of 1625. During the Thirty Years' War , the population suffered looting by the Swedish army in 1643. Another fire destroyed the houses on the main square in 1666.

In the second half of the 17th century the monastery of the Paulaner Order was built at the expense of the manor. The magnificent baroque style monastery church was consecrated in 1724 and improved in the years that followed. It soon served as a pilgrimage church. Its furnishings include two paintings by Peter Johann Brandl and one each by Joseph von Führich and Josef Zelený. The frescoes were created by Josef Kramolín . As part of the Josephine reforms , the monastery was dissolved. The buildings served as a hospital from 1872.
