history

Valdice was founded on August 10, 1627 when Albrecht von Waldstein founded the Carthusian monastery of St. Bruno in memory of his late wife Lucretia . After Waldstein had to stop building the new pilgrimage church and the Carthusian monastery in Stiep in 1620 , he transferred the Stieper Carthusian monastery to Valdice in 1623. He also donated Radim Castle and twelve villages with all accessories such as mills, forests and ponds to the order. The monks also received the Pecka castle rule with the town of Pecka and eleven other villages.

After the construction of the monastery, for which the builders Andrea Spezza and Giovanni Battista Marini created the plans, was completed in 1632, the foundation stone for the monastery church was laid on July 30th. A craft settlement consisting of 20 houses was built around the monastery, the residents of which worked for the order. This settlement was named forest after the adjacent zoo.

As early as 1625, Waldstein had the remains of his first wife Lucretia transferred from the old church in Stiep to the church's crypt. After his murder on the night of the murder of Eger on February 25, 1634, his remains were stored for two years in the Minorite monastery of St. Maria Magdalena in Mies , from where they were transferred to Karthaus in June 1636 and buried in the crypt next to his wife. 34 years after the death of the Generalissimo, the construction of the monastery church was completed. The settlement of Wald or Walditz / Valdice was now called Karthaus / Kartouzy by the Carthusians.

In the course of the Josephine reforms, the Karthaus monastery was dissolved on the basis of the imperial decree of January 29, 1782. In the same year, the Waldstein family had the remains of Albrecht and Lucretia von Waldstein transferred to their rule in Münchengrätz , where they were given their final resting place in the St. Anne's Chapel. In 1783 the monastery buildings were to be auctioned off to the public, but no bidder was found. The monastery then served as the imperial military magazine and the official seat of the administrators of the Radim rule. During the Napoleonic Wars, the former monastery church was consecrated to St. Joseph. After the military had cleared the monastery and a new owner was found for the Radim rule, the abandoned buildings fell into disrepair.

After patrimonial was replaced , Valdice became part of the municipality of Soběraz in the Jičín district in 1850 .

In 1856 the decision was made to convert the monastery into a penitentiary for serious criminals with a term of more than ten years. After a year of construction, the first prisoners, including the robber Wenzel Babinsky , were brought to Karthaus from the casemates of the Spielberg fortress in 1857 . The penitentiary was intended for 800 prisoners who were cared for by 20 Sisters of Charity of St. Charles Borromeo took place.

In 1880 the place got its independence as a municipality under the name Kartouzy-Valdice. In 1950 the name of the municipality was changed to Valdice. In 1970 there were 780 inhabitants in the community. Since the 1970s, Valdice has been developed into a satellite settlement of Jičín. By 1990 four new streets with single-family houses and twelve apartment blocks were built. This almost doubled the number of residents of Valdice. 1991 lived in the place 1582 people.
