The Veliš (German Welisch ) is a 429 m high basalt mountain near Podhradí in the Czech Okres Jičín , southwest of the city of Jičín . There is a castle ruin on the summit, which offers a good panoramic view of the surrounding area.

history

Veliš Castle around 1650

The royal castle Weliss was probably built around 1300. It was first documented in 1316 by Johann von Luxemburg , who pledged it to Půta von Friedland. In 1327 the pledge was passed on to the Wartenbergers , who received the castle as hereditary property in 1337.

In 1452 Georg von Podebrady bought the castle and in 1487 Mikuláš Trčka from Lípa became the owner of Veliš. Between 1593 and 1596 it was rebuilt in the late Gothic style. After the battle of the White Mountain , Albrecht von Waldstein acquired the castle and intended to build a monastery there. During the Thirty Years War the Swedes besieged the castle unsuccessfully. By order of Emperor Leopold I , Veliš Castle was razed in 1658.

Remains of the Veliš Castle

The residents of Podhradí used the ruins to extract building materials. In 1768 there were major demolitions for the construction of the castle in Milíčeves. In the 19th century, a basalt quarry was built on the castle hill, through which the mountain top including the ruins was almost completely removed until it was closed in 1879.

Only a few remains of the wall and parts of the artillery fortifications of the once stately castle have been preserved. The brick turret built on the top of the mountain in 1942 is now used for telecommunications.

In 1998, the mountain, together with the Church of St. Wenceslas in Veliš , the Baroque Vokšice Castle, the Andělíček chapel and the Loreta of the Virgin Mary, was declared a monument zone.
