Antonín Profous

Antonín Profous (born January 2, 1878 in Libanice near Chrudim in Bohemia ; † March 27, 1953 in Prague ) was a Czech linguist, active in the field of onomastics and toponomics , follower of the positivist school founded by Jan Gebauer . In his main work Místní jména v Čechách (The place names in Bohemia) he scientifically processed about 15,500 place names of cities and towns in their etymological origin.

Life

Profous graduated from high school in Chrudim , then studied at the Philosophical Faculty of the Charles University in Prague and one semester at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1903 he received his doctorate in philosophy. He then worked as a grammar school professor from 1903 to 1904 in Rakovník , from 1904 to 1909 in Pilsen and then until 1938 in Prague-Vinohrady . He is the author of numerous studies and papers and a fundamental reference work on place name research. He was an employee of the place name commission of the Czech Academy of Sciences at the place name revision commission of the Ministry of Interior in Czechoslovakia . In 1927 he married Jarmila Roeselová.
