Jan Gebauer
Jan Gebauer (born October 8, 1838 in Úbislavice near Nová Paka , † May 25, 1907 in Prague ) was a Czech linguist and literary historian.
Life
After graduating from high school in Jičín , he studied classical and Slavic linguistics at Charles University in Prague . He then taught at the secondary schools in Prague and Pardubice and worked on the editing of the lexicon František Ladislav Riegers ( Riegrův slovník naučný ).
In 1873 he completed his habilitation at the Charles University in the subjects of Czech language and literature , but later expanded his work to include the entire Slavic philology . In 1860 he was appointed professor of the philosophy faculty , after the language separation at the university in 1882 he switched to the Czech-speaking one, where he taught until his death. Gebauer was dean of the philosophical faculty from 1890 to 1891 and rector of the university from 1899 to 1900 .
His daughter is the writer Marie Gebauerová .

Jan Gebauer is seen as the founder of modern Czech linguistics . The philologist and university professor was a representative of the grammar school. Together with Jaroslav Goll and Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk , he dealt with the forgeries of the Grünberger and Königinhofer manuscripts . He refuted the authenticity through linguistic arguments.
Works
His main works are the historical grammar of Czech (Historická mluvnice českého jazyka) and the Old Czech Dictionary (Slovník staročeský), which has remained unfinished. He also wrote numerous scientific articles for newspapers and magazines.
