Mentawai Islands: Pagai macaques live on Sipora Island and the Pagai Islands

The Pagai macaque ( Macaca pagensis ) is a species of primate from the genus of macaques within the family of vervet monkeys (Cercopithecidae). It is closely related to the Siberut macaque , and the two species are often grouped together as the Mentawai macaque .

The fur of these animals is dark brown on the back and on the hind legs, the front legs are reddish and the shoulder area is gray. Similar to the closely related porcupine monkey , the tail is short.

These animals live exclusively on the 6,700 square kilometer Mentawai Islands to the west of Sumatra . They occur there on the island of Sipora and the Pagai Islands . The main habitat of these animals are the mangrove and swampy tropical rainforests of the islands.

Pagai macaques live both on the ground and in the trees, but retreat to higher branches to sleep. They live in groups of 5 to 25 animals; In contrast to most of the other macaque species, these are harem groups consisting of just one male with several females and the offspring.

The food of the Pagai macaques consists mainly of fruits, presumably like other macaque species they also eat other parts of plants and small animals. Sometimes they also loot plantations .

Due to their small distribution area, Pagai macaques are endangered species. The destruction of their habitat, combined with hunting due to the devastation they caused to the plantations, has led to the species being considered critically endangered.
