Josef Ladislav Jandera
Josef Ladislav Jandera , OPraem (German Joseph Ladislaus Jandera ; born February 19, 1776 in Hořice , † July 27, 1857 in Prague ) was a Catholic theologian and professor of mathematics at the University of Prague , where he held the post of rector in the academic year 1828 . He belonged to the Premonstratensian Order .
Life
Josef Ladislav Jandera attended the Jesuit grammar school in Königgrätz and then studied theology. In 1800 he joined the Premonstratensian Order and was accepted into the Strahov Monastery . In 1802 he was ordained a priest. He completed his studies in philosophy and mathematics at the Karl-Ferdinand University in 1804 with a doctorate. phil. from. In 1805 he was appointed to succeed his teacher Stanislaus Wydra on his chair for mathematics. The opposing candidate was the philosopher and mathematician Bernard Bolzano . In honor of their joint teacher Wydra, Jandera gave the “Speech to the commemorative celebrity of the Revered Stanislaus Wydra” on July 20, 1816, which was printed in the same year by the Prague publishing house Gottlieb Haase. In the academic year 1828 he held the post of university rector.
Jandera wrote textbooks on arithmetic in Latin and German. Typical of his time, he saw mathematics as a “size theory” and not as an investigation of structures. He has received numerous honors and awards for his achievements. I.a. he was a member of the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences . The city of Prague made him an honorary citizen in 1855.
