Zdeněk Šimek (born April 19, 1927 in Veselí nad Lužnicí , † 1970 in Prague ) was a Czech sculptor .

life and work

Zdeněk Šimek attended the Academy for Art, Architecture and Design in Prague and studied sculpture under Josef Wagner with Olbram Zoubek and his future wife Eva Kmentová. In 1964 he became a member of the Trasa artist group, which existed until 1970 . Šimek's work went in the direction of abstract art and was strongly minimalist .

Šimek's work is part of the permanent abstract sculpture exhibition in the National Gallery in Prague .

One of his last works was a stone sundial that he designed in 1969 as a hobby astronomer for the city of Prachatice .

His entire work only found recognition after his death in the 1970s.
