description

The Lorica Plumata was a scale armor that reached to the thighs. It was very similar to the Lorica Squamata , but differed in the shape of the iron plates and the fact that the scales were attached to chain armor ( Lorica Hamata ). While the scales of the Lorica Squamata were square, the scales of the Lorica Plumata tapered to a point or round. This is where the name of this armor comes from: The pointed iron plates are reminiscent of bird feathers (Latin: plumae ). A subarmalis was usually worn under the Lorica Plumata . This armor weighed a total of 15 kg.

The Lorica Plumata was only worn by officers and was a kind of badge of rank.
