Ludwig Gabriel Schrieber (born April 24, 1907 in Waldniel , Gladbach district , Rhineland ; † April 16, 1975 during a trip to Nesselwang in the Allgäu) was a German sculptor , painter and draftsman . He was also director of the Berlin University of the Arts for four years .

The son of a master brewer from Waldniel initially completed an apprenticeship in the chasing trade , from 1924 to 1930 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Professors Jan Thorn-Prikker and Heinrich Campendonk and received a master class atelier in the so-called Hunger Tower opposite the academy building . In 1950 Schrieber received the Cornelius Prize of the city of Düsseldorf for sculpture. Schrieber lived in Düsseldorf until 1951, before he accepted a call as a professor of sculpture at the Berlin University of the Arts, and was one of his students. a. the painter and graphic artist Ernst Marow . When the director Karl Otto retired, Schrieber initially took on the role of director of the facility on a temporary basis, was finally appointed to this position on January 1, 1971 and held it until his resignation for health reasons at the end of 1973. He had a long-standing friendship with Günter Grass , who completed part of his training at this university. Grass devoted an entire chapter in his novel The Flounder to his friend . He also wrote the text for the catalog of a work exhibition by Schrieber in the Städtische Galerie Viersen.

Ludwig Gabriel Schrieber was a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund since it was re-established in 1950 and from 1970 to 1973 deputy chairman of the board of the DKB. Until his death he took part in almost all DKB exhibitions. Ludwig Gabriel Schrieber was buried in an honorary grave (field 008 no. 135-136) at the Dahlem-Dorf cemetery in Berlin-Zehlendorf.

In 2007 the Brusberg Gallery in Berlin dedicated an exhibition to him.
