Dorothee von Windheim (born July 11, 1945 in Volmerdingsen in the Minden district ) is a German visual artist.

Life

Dorothee von Windheim studied from 1965 to 1971 at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts as a student of Gotthard Graubner . From 1971 to the end of 1975 she then had her first stay abroad in Florence . During this time, von Windheim worked as a fresco restorer in the Palazzo Pitti in 1971 , and she received a DAAD scholarship from 1971 to 1972 . In addition, she was a guest at the Villa Romana in 1975 as a prizewinner . A second stay abroad followed in Paris from 1977 to 1980, which was financed in 1977 with a scholarship for the Cité Internationale des Arts Paris . Dorothee von Windheim has had a studio in Cologne since 1981.

After visiting professorships at the universities of Essen and Gießen and at the International Summer Academy in Salzburg , Dorothee von Windheim has been teaching at the Kassel Art Academy since 1989 as a professor for old and new artistic media .

The artist originally comes from painting; and this is how it was characterized in 1988:

"For me, the job title means less a sign of my professional activity than my attitude towards life. I am a painter."

Since the late 1960s, von Windheim has investigated the phenomena of imprints and images of real objects in her work. She experimented with stacked cloths and papers, which she had soaked in paints and fats, chlorinated , burned and boiled. The artist viewed the results as a projection of her own physical condition into the material.

But before her stay in Florence, she buried her last painting in 1971. During her time in Florence, Dorothee von Windheim developed her own artistic forensics using the Strappo method : She removed parts of the facade in the Fortezza da Basso - in the monument that Alessandro de 'Medici had erected.

Since then she has been working in the fields of photography, self-portraits and handkerchiefs from her own body. She is committed to conceptual art in her way of working .
