Maria Sibylla Merian Prize

Between 1994 and 2009 the Hessian Ministry for Science and Art awarded women artists with the Maria Sibylla Merian Prize . The prize, named after the Frankfurt naturalist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian , was awarded to visual artists "who, through the quality of their work, had made a special contribution to the promotion and development of art and culture in Hesse". It was endowed with 15,000 euros and could be shared.

The award for 2009 was presented to the installation artist Andrea Büttner in Schloss Biebrich . Members of the jury were Jutta Schütt (Städel Museum), Marianne Heinz (Museumslandschaft Hessen Kassel), Tamara Grcic (Maria Sibylla Merian Prize Winner 2000), Ralf Beil (Institute Mathildenhöhe, Darmstadt) and Rein Wolfs (Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel).

Another “Maria Sibylla Merian Prize” was awarded to young women scientists between 1998 and 2005 by the Essen College for Gender Studies at the University of Duisburg-Essen .
