Bice Curiger
Bice Curiger ( Beatrice Gabriella Livia Curiger ) (born July 18, 1948 in Zurich ) is a Swiss art scholar and curator . In 2011 she curated the Venice Biennale and is currently artistic director of the Fondation Vincent van Gogh in Arles .
Life
Curiger grew up as an only child in an art-friendly home. Her mother is a creative tailor from Ticino, her father works as an architect in an office for industrial buildings. She studied art history at the University of Zurich , with the minor subjects folklore and literary criticism . Her licensed thesis focused on the Swiss painter Albert Welti . In the 1960s she was a regular at the legendary Zurich underground club Platte 27, which also frequented Dieter Meier , Fredi Murer , Urs Lüthi and Manon . In the early 1970s she wrote art reviews for the Zürcher Tages-Anzeiger . In 1980 she curated her first exhibition Saus und Braus in Zurich's Strauhof , which is now legendary and referred to pop culture and the Zurich youth riots . A work by the artists Fischli & Weiss was shown here for the first time with the Wurst Series (1979) .
Her monograph on the artist Meret Oppenheim was published in 1982 . In 1984, together with Walter Keller , Jacqueline Burckhardt , Dieter von Graffenried and Peter Blum, she founded the art magazine Parkett , which appears in Zurich and New York, and of which she is editor-in-chief to this day. From 1992 to 2013 she was a permanent curator at the Kunsthaus Zürich and since 2005 she has published the museum magazine Tate etc. at the Tate Gallery in London . On her initiative, Sigmar Polke realized glass windows for the Grossmünster in Zurich between 2006 and 2009 .
Between 1984 and 1994 she was a member of the Federal Art Commission and from 1999 to 2004 she was a member of the University Council of the University of Zurich. In 2006/2007 she held the Rudolf Arnheim Professorship at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 2007 she received the Heinrich Wölfflin Medal , the Art Education Prize of the City of Zurich, and in 2009 the "SI Award" from the Swiss Institute in New York. In 2012 she received the CHF 50,000 Culture Prize of the Canton of Zurich and the Prix Meret Oppenheim worth CHF 40,000 . 2013 the "Centenario" award from BSI SA in Lugano. In 2013 the French state appointed her “Chevalier dans l ' ordre des Arts et des Lettres ”.
Curiger was the director of the 2011 Venice Biennale , which took place under the title LLUMInazioni / ILLUMInations . Since summer 2013 she has been the artistic director of the Fondation Vincent van Gogh in Arles, an institution that opened in April 2014 in a newly converted building from the 15th century.
