Strauhof
The Strauhof is an exhibition center in Zurich for literature . The baroque town house is located in the middle of the old town of Zurich at Augustinergasse 9 and has exhibition space on two floors. The Strauhof is supported by the non-profit «Verein Literaturmuseum Zürich».
history
The current character of the baroque town house Das Haus zum Strauhof dates back to 1772 and has largely been preserved. The property has been used by the Presidential Department of the City of Zurich for cultural events since the 1950s. After extensive renovation, the Strauhof was transformed from the municipal art chamber into a museum for cultural-historical exhibitions in 1989, with the focus increasingly shifting to literary content over the years.
In 2002, Roman Hess, Head of Literature in the Culture Department of the City of Zurich, took over the management of the Strauhof and positioned the house as a museum for literary exhibitions. As part of a restructuring of the Zurich literature funding, the closure of the Museum Strauhof was announced in 2013. This sparked widespread controversy and international protest, and called countless Swiss artists onto the scene. Under the direction of Roman Hess, the museum was widely known as an exhibition space for literature, and he himself had a major impact on literary culture in the city of Zurich.
A petition with over 4,000 signatures against the establishment of a writing laboratory for young people in the rooms on Augustinergasse and the alternative move of the Strauhof to Bärengasse was successful. The protests of private individuals as well as professors, representatives of well-known museums and cultural institutions ultimately led to the decision to continue to hold literary exhibitions in the Strauhof. The planned Jull writing laboratory was then set up on Bärengasse. The Strauhof was allowed to remain in the usual premises at Augustinergasse 9.
Following a public invitation to tender, at the end of 2014, on the recommendation of a jury of experts chaired by the publicist Klara Obermüller, the Strauhof was run by the non-profit “Verein Literaturmuseum Zürich” for an initial period of three years. Before the handover to the new sponsor on July 1, 2015, the property was temporarily used in spring 2015 by the literary historian Charles Linsmayer and the community of Publishers in Residence .
In 2017, after completing the three-year pilot phase, the municipal council decided to transfer the Strauhof to normal operation and to increase the operating fee. The management under Rémi Jaccard and Gesa Schneider wants to take up current social issues with the literary exhibitions and create stronger synergies in the cultural sector.
concept
The Strauhof is not a museum in the strict sense , because the exhibition house does not have its own collection. Under the direction of Gesa Schneider and Rémi Jaccard, the Strauhof illuminates historical and social processes based on current issues: With exhibitions, an event section and educational offers, the Strauhof promotes knowledge and understanding of literature. The exhibitions are either dedicated to authors or themes. In addition, between the exhibitions, a wild card is regularly made possible for projects by various collectives that move between literature, spatial staging and social issues.
