Dermestes laniarius is a beetle from the family of the bacon beetles (Dermestidae).

features

Dermestes laniarius is a 6.5–8 mm long oblong oval beetle. He is covered with gray-white and black hair. At the end of the sensor there is a club-shaped thickening.

Occurrence

Dermestes laniarius occurs in the western Palearctic . The species is widespread in Europe. The distribution area extends in the east to Central Asia.

Way of life

The beetle species prefers sandy habitats. The beetles feed on carrion and rotting parts of plants. They usually fly from April to June. When in danger, the beetles pull their limbs together on the ventral side.
