Leo Breuer

Leo Breuer (born September 21, 1893 in Bonn ; † March 14, 1975 ibid) was a German painter, draftsman and sculptor.

The artist's early works were still dominated by realism . The French painter Auguste Herbin , whom Breuer met during his stay in Paris, influenced and determined his painting style towards abstraction with a focus on objects and colors. He got in touch with the painter Hans Hartung and the ceramicist Michel Seuphor . Via Auguste Herbin and Antoine Pevsner then also to other artists of the “ Salon des Réalités Nouvelles ”, in whose annual exhibitions he regularly participated from 1946 to 1975; from 1953 he was a board member in this artist group. In order to express his reducing art more intensely, he often chose the form of relief work in his works . From 1953 Breuer was also a member of the Bonn artist group and the German Association of Artists .

He has given many of his works to the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn , which exhibits a considerable part of them. This transfer was connected with the announcement of a prize for the promotion of young artists. The eponymous Leo Breuer Prize is the Rhineland Regional endowed with currently 5,000 euros and announced every two years by the Rheinische Landesmuseum in Bonn and awarded.

In 1985 the Leo-Breuer-Weg in Bonn was named after him.

A retrospective solo exhibition took place in the spring of 2001 at the Arithmeum in Bonn under the title The Search for the Essentials .
