Derick Baegert [ ˈbaːgərt ] (* around 1440 in Wesel , † around 1515 in Wesel) was an important German painter of the late Gothic period . Under Flemish, Westphalian and Rhenish influence he developed his very own style of extraordinary quality. His works are characterized by a high level of detail in the painting.

life and work

Around 1475 Baegert painted the high altar for the church of the Dominican monastery in Dortmund , today the provost church , where the reredos are still placed. The painting was commissioned by Duke Johann I von Kleve for the monks' convent in the imperial city. A self-portrait of the artist is transmitted on the work , the first known in north-western European painting.

In the following period (1477–1478) the high altar of the Mathenakirche in Wesel, which was destroyed in the Second World War , was built , of which only fragments are preserved in the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection . Around 1493/94 he created the court image taking an oath , which originally adorned the council chamber of the Wesel town hall and is now in the Wesel Municipal Museum. Baegert is the author of several other table altars in northwest Germany, including the crucifixion altar from St. Laurenz in Cologne, around 1500, now the Alte Pinakothek , Munich.

Among other things, Jan Joest made the high altar in the Church of St. Nicolai in Kalkar and a lost high altar for the Werden monastery .
