Jan Baegert (* around 1465 in Wesel , † after 1527 , possibly 1535 in Wesel) was a painter at the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern era . He was the son of the painter Derick Baegert and is considered one of the most important painters of his epoch of upheaval in the Westphalian and Lower Rhine region. Numerous commissioned works from these two regions indicate that he was well known at the time. His style is still in the late Gothic tradition , but already shows the influence of Renaissance painting , e.g. B. from Flanders .

Training and style

Jan Baegert received his training in his father's workshop. It is possible that he wandered the Netherlands from 1482 to 1484, which can also be seen in the influence of Rogier van der Weyden on his work. In 1492 he worked as a master craftsman in Kalkar, then after the death of his father in 1502 he continued his workshop in Wesel.

Even if the influence of new painting styles and motifs from the Renaissance can be found in Jan Baegert's late work , his work nevertheless remains generally associated with the late Gothic style .

Works (selection)

Are known z. B. the altar panels by Jan Baegert in Münster, parts of which are one of the city's oldest art holdings. As oak panels painted on both sides, they were part of a winged altar and were probably separated in the 18th century. 14 panels are in the city museum today, two more are privately owned.

In Wesel, Jan Baegert z. B. an altarpiece of the Resurrection from 1517/22.

Master of Cappenberg?

It is claimed that Jan Baegert is identical to the so-called Master von Cappenberg , the painter of a small-format winged altar in the former Cappenberg collegiate church in southern Münsterland.

Among other things, he is given a "picture of a donor in a hunting costume"; Oil tempera on oak wood, attributed.
