This article covers the West German national team at the 1972 European Football Championship in Belgium .

qualification

The West German team met Poland , Turkey and Albania in qualifying group 8 . Although there was a disappointing 1: 1 against Turkey at the beginning of the qualification, the team of the FRG was able to improve in the course of the qualification, win all their away games and thus qualify for the quarter-finals.

The 3-1 victory of the West German team at Wembley Stadium in London was the first victory of a German team against England in their homeland. The goals for the FRG were scored by Uli Hoeneß (26th min.), Günter Netzer (85th minute from a penalty kick), Gerd Müller (88th minute). In the meantime, Francis Lee was able to equalize for England in the 77th minute. The game is one of the legendary games of the German national football team. (→ Wembley-Eleven )
