A painter who worked on the Upper Rhine in the middle of the 15th century is referred to as the master of the Darmstadt Passion . Since his name is unknown, he is given an emergency name after one of his works.

Like Stefan Lochner in Cologne , he was one of the first artists in southern Germany to be influenced by the old Dutch painters from Flanders . However, he developed an independent visual language with unmistakable colors and moving crowds. The work of the master of the Darmstadt Passion is also particularly characterized by the representation of the effect of light and its use to intensify the colors. The master of the vision of John may have been his disciple.
