Israhel van Meckenem (* around 1440 / 1445 ; † 10. November 1503 in Bocholt ) was an important engraver of the 15th century in Germany . The student of Master ES was already regarded by his contemporaries as one of the most important masters of this art direction.

life and work

His father was Israhel van Meckenem the elder . His workshop was in Bocholt, Westphalia . Due to their origins in Meckenheim in the Rhineland, the artist's family carried the Low German name van Meckenem, from Meckenheim.

In 1465 he worked in Kleve and in 1482 Israhel van Meckenem was verifiably active for the council of the city of Bocholt.

With 550 copper engravings, van Meckenem left the most comprehensive work of all copper engravers of the 15th century. In addition to his own work, Israhel van Meckenem also made many engravings based on the works of Albrecht Dürer , Hans Holbein the Elder , Martin Schongauer and others. a., whereby he also appeared as a publisher.

The series of twelve sheets of depictions from everyday life is one of the artist's best-known works . An important art-historical document for the late 15th century is the double portrait of the artist with his wife Ida. Very beautiful, allegorical- moral engravings of lovers were made between 1495 and 1503.

His grave is in the parish church of St. Georg in Bocholt , where he was buried in 1503. A drawing of his tombstone is said to have been preserved in the British Museum .

Catalog of works

A first catalog of works with biographical information about his family was published in 1839 by Georg Kaspar Nagler . The catalog of works that is relevant today was published in 1986 by Tilman Falk and Fritz Koreny .
