Israhel van Meckenem the Elder
Israhel van Meckenem (the elder) (* probably around 1430 in Mechelen ; † probably after 1466 in Bocholt ) was a copper engraver and goldsmith from the Lower Rhine region of the 15th century.
He was probably born in Mechelen . Evidently he was active in Bocholt in 1457/1461 and in Bonn in 1464/1466 . He created the oldest known ornament engravings .
Due to their origins in Meckenheim in the Rhineland, the artist's family carried the Low German name van Meckenem, from Meckenheim. His son was Israhel van Meckenem the younger . He is possibly identical with the previously unknown Lower Rhine copper engraver Master of the Berlin Passion .
