Hans Reischl (born December 6, 1939 in Heindlschlag ) is a retired German business manager. From 1977 to 2004 he was CEO of the Cologne trading group Rewe .

Life

Reischl grew up as the youngest member of a large farming family in a village near Passau in Lower Bavaria . He then completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk in Solingen and worked for the automobile manufacturer Ford in Cologne. From 1961 he worked at Rewe, while doing his A-levels at the evening high school in Cologne and then studied economics at the University of Cologne until 1970 . He wrote his diploma thesis on the competitiveness of cooperatives and other legal forms .

Previously already a freelancer at Rewe headquarters, he got a permanent position in the same year. In 1974 he was appointed to the board as the youngest member at the time, and three years later he was appointed chairman of the central group organizations Rewe-Zentral AG and Rewe Zentralfinanz eG. Under his leadership, the cooperative auditing association grew primarily through acquisitions (1989 takeover of 50% of the Leibbrand Group , 1990 conversion of Rewe into a group structure , 1996 takeover of Billa , increased international activities, entry into the tourism business) to become one of the largest trading groups in Germany and Central Europe.

Eight months before his retirement, Reischl resigned all offices at Rewe on April 30, 2004 after allegations of corruption that later proved to be unfounded and signed a termination agreement at the end of the year in order to prevent dismissal by the Supervisory Board. As previously prepared by Reischl and Thomas Middelhoff , the supervisory board did not allow him to join the supervisory board of KarstadtQuelle , a department store group that competes with Rewe in some areas , and which his successor Ernst Dieter Berninghaus took over. In 2016, the Essen Regional Court brought charges against Hans Reischl, five other former supervisory board members of Arcandor and Thomas Middelhoff, for unjustified bonus payments in the millions. The proceedings against Reischl were discontinued in July 2017 against a monetary deposit.

2006 him the Faculty of Economics awarded University of Passau , the honorary doctorate . In addition, Reischl has been a holder of the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia since 2003 .
