This article is about FC Winterthur in the 2017/18 season . FC Winterthur is playing in the Challenge League this season . In the Swiss Cup , he was eliminated in the second round against the fourth-class 1st division club SR Delémont and he finished the championship in 9th place. Despite the bad season in which FCW took over the red lantern several times in the first half of the season, thanks to the voluntary relegation of FC Wohlen, he was no longer in serious danger of relegation at the beginning of the second half . It was also the first season after the end of the financial guarantee from former President Hannes W. Keller , which additionally challenged the club by looking for new donors and a new president - although no new president could be found by the end of the season .
Season course
preparation
After a mixed season, coach Romano analyzed that he now has to put his stamp on the team and bring “characters” into the team. According to the coach, they were looking for a new head of defense, an “aggressive leader”, someone for the right flank, an eight for midfield and someone on the offensive. As a candidate for the position of defense chief, Jordi López was signed and for the right flank Nicolas Stettler, on loan from FC Zurich , should be a win. Other arrivals before the start of the season were defender Denis Markaj and midfielders Robin Huser (from Basel) and Kwadwo Duah , the latter on loan from YB. Ming-Yang Yang , who was also required to strengthen midfield, left FCW shortly before the end of the transfer window for Great Britain, where he will be used by the Wolverhampton Wanderers U23 team . On the other hand, a departure of last year's top scorer Silvio could be prevented, who was toying with a departure to local rivals FC Wil . Luca Radice was chosen as the new captain .
FC Winterthur did well in the preparatory games, with victories against lower-class teams from Bülach, Muri and St. Gallen (SC Brühl) and defeats against Aarau and Thun. However , the Winterthur team won the final rehearsal against Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg 2-1.
First round
Already at the beginning of the first half of the season it was clear that the FCW could not aim for a top position, according to Landboten the team should rather be the only team in a secure midfield. In addition, coach Romano also expressed the hope and goal of being a surprise team - the 2017/18 season should not be the same as last year.
The start of the season, however, already announced the thrust for the rest of the first half of the season, it started with two defeats against Wohlen and Rapperswil-Jona, whereby the appearance against the newcomer Rapperswil-Jona was even described as "scary" by the country messenger. This fear turned out to be justified in the aftermath, so Winterthur could only get one point against Aarau and Vaduz and suffered another defeat against Servette. FC Winterthur was only able to achieve its first success with a 2-0 win against Wil. But this victory was by no means a turnaround and in the middle of September the cup-out followed in the second round against the two classes worse SR Delémont . After another defeat at the beginning of the second half of the second half against FC Wohlen at the beginning of October, Winterthur took over the red lantern again and, measured against the first ten games of the season, was able to write the worst start to the season since 1986 in its history books. Even after that, the second half of the season didn't get any better and resembled the first part of the first half of the season: Again there was a defeat against Rapperswil-Jona, with Winterthur receiving three red cards in the game, and after another two draws and one defeat, Wil was able to play at home against bottom of the table a 2-0 win prevents them from slipping to last place. In the remaining three games, the three-point lead at the bottom of the table melted down to one point, the FCW finished the preliminary round with only 12 points in 9th place and thus did even worse than in the preliminary round of last season.
Corresponding to the first half of the season, the Landbote then also came up with a “horror conclusion”. The newcomers did not bring the desired impetus and the individual player rating in the newspaper also reflected the poor overall performance of the team, all players received a school grade of 3-4 or "just under 4" from the country messenger - the newcomer Kwadwo Duah even only a 3. The club management one week late, drew the consequences of the poor first half of the season and released coach Umberto Romano after a year.
Another topic in autumn were the management and financial problems, since there has been no new president since the resignation of President Hannes W. Keller and with the 2016/17 season the financial guarantee that the club had for two seasons after his resignation ended was granted. In spite of this, no new main sponsor or president has been found who would meet the demands of the club's management - potential foreign investors have not yet been able to answer the question about the reason for such an investment satisfactorily. More concrete, however, are efforts to find a possible partner club whose club culture should be similar to that of the FCW. The press acted as a potential candidate for SC Freiburg , but the club's management only confirmed negotiations with a possible partner club in the vicinity, without naming the name.
Second half
The successor to Romano was first announced in January. With Livio Bordoli, a coach was brought in, who last coached the sixth-class 2nd division club Losone Sportiva in Losone in Ticino and probably had no one on the bill before. The promotion coach of FC Lugano from the summer of 2015 was surprised by the request from Winterthur, even to the media, as he had been "away from the window" for two and a half years. Simultaneously with the signing of the new coach, midfielder Ousmane Dombia , Seydou Doumbia's younger brother , was the first signing on the Schützenwiese. The third goalkeeper Bojan Milosavljevic was brought in from Zurich U21. The third new arrival was midfielder Nikola Milosavljevic on loan from FC Sion . In return, Genc Krasniqi left FCW during the winter break and switched to FC Kosova on loan . During the extended transfer period in March, FCW also left the U21 game Tobias Schättin (for FC Zurich ; including purchase option) and Robin Huser (for FC Thun ) on loan until the end of the season . The transfer of Manuel Akanjis from FC Basel to Borussia Dortmund also has a lot of money in the Winterthur coffers . The FCW earned the 20 to 25 million dollar transfer thanks to a resale clause of 3.25% and a further 3% on the transfer received between 1.2 and 1.6 million francs, depending on media reports - money that the club, which had to reduce its budget this season by 500,000 francs to 3.9 million francs after the exit of the main sponsor Keller, can use it .
Due to the voluntary relegation of FC Wohlen through license waiver , which was announced at the beginning of January, it was already clear when Bordolis was signed as coach that FC Winterthur would most likely contest the second half of the season as a long preparation for the new season. The announced relegation was then definitely confirmed at the beginning of March when the Swiss Football League did not submit the license .
Despite the secure starting position, a clear correction was required for the Landbote after the weakest preliminary round of the decade. Winterthur started the first five games with two wins against Wohlen and Vaduz as well as a draw against leaders Neuchâtel Xamax, losing a previously existing 1: 4 lead at 4: 4 at Schützenwiese. Coach Bordoli said after five games that on the one hand he saw a good attitude and camaraderie in the team, but the team played too well to win games. Even after the first half of the second half of the season, the record with nine points from eight games was better than in the preliminary round, but still not convincing. However, sports director Kaiser expressed his satisfaction with Bordoli's work with regard to further cooperation at this point. The question of cooperation was settled in April, when it became known that Bordolis would be the new technical director of the Ticino Football Association. Since the rest of the preliminary round wasn't exactly brilliant either, the team couldn't get away from ninth place, even if the team earned eight points more in the second half than in the first half. At the end of the season, the media reported that the reasons for the weak season included too few leaders and weak team cohesion. The weak season was also reflected in the Landbote's score, in which only Gabriel Isik, Silvio, Luca Radice and newcomer Ousmane Doumbia received a grade of 4. Also unresolved at the end of the season was the question of the future president and a possible collaboration with a partner club, which was already an issue in the first half of the season - only a new coach with Ralf Loose had already been found. The FCW women's team, which was founded two years ago and was promoted to the 1st league (third highest league in Switzerland) and won the Zurich Regional Cup, known as the AXPO Cup, went better.
