Esther Staubli (born October 3, 1979 in Bern ) is a Swiss football referee . She whistles for the club FC Rot-Schwarz Thun .

life and career

Esther Staubli was once a soccer player herself and became a referee in 2000. She directs games in the National League A , the top division in Swiss women's football. The UEFA she was nominated for the final of the UEFA Women's Champions League 2014/15 between 1. FFC Frankfurt and Paris Saint-Germain . In the men's area, it was initially used in the junior area and quickly rose to higher divisions. In September 2014 she made her debut in the second-rate Challenge League in the game between FC Wohlen and FC Le Mont-sur-Lausanne .

Staubli has been a FIFA referee since 2006 . At the 2011 World Cup , she was used as the fourth official . As a referee, she directed games at the 2010 U-17 Women's World Championships in Trinidad and Tobago and at the U-20 World Championships in Japan in 2012 and two years later in Canada . At the 2013 European Championships , Staubli led the semi-finals between Sweden and Germany . On December 2, 2014, she led the playoff second leg of the Pan-American qualification for the 2015 World Cup between Ecuador and Trinidad & Tobago , which made Ecuador the last team to qualify for the World Cup. FIFA nominated Staubli for the 2015 World Cup . On May 2, 2016, she was nominated for her first Olympic football tournament. There she directed the group matches between South Africa and China and between Australia and Zimbabwe.

At the 2017 European Women's Football Championship , she led the final between the Netherlands and Denmark .

In October 2017, she was one of seven women referees on the supporting team of referees at the 2017 U-17 World Cup , which was the first time that several women were used in a men's World Cup. On October 14th, she was in charge of the group game between Japan and New Caledonia, which means that after 16 years a female referee was again in charge of a men's FIFA match.

Staubli works full-time as an agronomist and lectures at the University of Agriculture in Zollikofen .

On December 3, 2018, she was nominated for the 2019 Women's World Cup .
