Kateryna Volodymyriwna Monsul ( Ukrainian Катерина Володимирівна Монзуль , born July 5, 1981 in Kharkiv ) is a Ukrainian football referee who led the opening game and final of the 2015 Women's World Cup . In 2015 she was elected world referee .
Career
Monsul has been in charge of international matches since 2004 and was the first time referee in an international match on September 24, 2005 when Finland played against Poland in qualifying for the 2007 World Cup . She was then not nominated for the World Cup itself and at the following World Cup she was only used as the fourth official . Her first major tournament was the 2009 European Women's Football Championship in Finland , where she headed the group games France against Germany and Sweden against England . Further international matches followed and she was nominated for the 2013 European Championship in Sweden , the 2014 U-20 Women's World Cup in Canada and the 2015 World Cup in Canada, where she was in charge of the opening match between hosts Canada and the People's Republic China and the finals have reached their peak so far. In the opening game, she gave a controversial penalty in stoppage time when the score was 0-0 for the hosts, which Christine Sinclair converted to a 1-0 win for the Canadians. In addition, she was used in several tournaments in the junior area. At club level, she directs games in the Perscha Liha , the second highest Ukrainian men's league, as well as games in the UEFA Women's Champions League , including the 2014 final between Tyresö FF and VfL Wolfsburg . Since April 2016 she has also been directing the Premjer-Liha , the highest league in Ukrainian men's football. On May 2, 2016, she was nominated for her first Olympic football tournament.
In October 2017, she was one of seven referees on the supporting team of referees at the U-17 World Cup in 2017 , which was the first time women were used in a men's World Cup.
On December 3, 2018, she was nominated for the 2019 Women's World Cup .
