This article is about FC Winterthur in the 2012/13 season . FC Winterthur reached 3rd place in the Challenge League this season and was eliminated from FC Köniz in the 2nd round of the Swiss Cup .

Season course

preparation

FC Winterthur was able to start preparing for the new season with only three departures compared to the previous season: In addition to the previous regular Luca Zuffi , who is moving to FC Thun , Dominik Ritter and Isuf Llumnica have left the club as expected. But the club was able to announce the return of defensive midfielder Denis Simijonovic at the start of training . During the preparation, Goran Antic left Winterthur for Aarau known, but two other important players - Exouzidis and Lenjani - could be held. The test match record was also not bad with wins in two of three test matches against Super League clubs.

The Landbote wrote in his season preview that the FCW now has the chance to become a top club in the league. Apart from the departures of Zuffi and Antic, the club did not have to record any significant departures and completed a good preparation. Coach Boro Kuzmanovic himself reported looking back on the good second half of the season that he would like to confirm this.

First round

Winterthur started the season with a 5-0 win away from home and was also able to win three of the following four games and thus secure the top of the table at the start of the season. Already in the preview for the 4th game, the Landbote wrote about promotion as a new season goal.

However, Winterthur lost the top position again after the second defeat and was not able to regain the top after that, until the 11th round the Winterthur were third seven points behind the leader FC Aarau . In this phase it was just enough for Winterthur to win, the reasons for this slump were to be found in several injuries and a lack of squad width of the Winterthur, where three important defensive players with Exouzidis, Sereinig and Von Niederhäusern were canceled in this phase.

However, the FCW was able to recover after this weak phase and the other seven games resulted in only six loss points. In fourth place, seven points behind, the Winterthur-based company was able to go into the winter break as a member of the extended top group. The Landbote's seasonal balance sheet was positive, apart from a “meager middle third”, but a deficit was located in the breadth of the squad. Sven Lüscher was chosen as the player in the preliminary round , who received a school grade of 5.5 in the individual assessment of the Landbote.

However, things did not go so well for the Winterthur team in the cup, after an already narrow 0-1 win against FC Eschenbach from the canton of Lucerne , the Eulach-based team were eliminated in a penalty shoot-out against the first division club FC Köniz , which was reinforced by many old stars .

Second half

Even before training started in the second half of the season, Lenjani, who had already played with the desire to leave during the summer break, terminated his contract with FC Winterthur and switched to FC St. Gallen - Jonas Elmer was signed to replace him . Lüscher also announced his departure to Aarau in the summer and was then relegated to the U21s, as, according to the coach, he was sending a signal that he wants to move up with Aarau and thus has a different objective than the FCW. As a nominal replacement of Lüscher, the Basel junior Marco Aratore should have been committed as well as Janko Pacar in storm and as a replacement for the two currently injured central defenders Exouzidis and Sereinig, the old international Beg Ferati was committed. To prepare for the second half of the season, after the Hallenmasters (3rd place) and a test match against Schaffhausen (1: 2), FCW traveled to the training camp in Belek in southern Turkey for 10 days , where they played against FC St. Pauli (1: 1), RB Leipzig (1: 2) and Roter Stern Belgrade (1: 2) tested. Winterthur lost the supposed final rehearsal before postponing the start of the second half against BSC Young Boys as well as the actual final rehearsal against Schaffhausen with 0-1. Despite the rather mixed test match record, the Landbote wrote under the impression of the transfers that the FCW should continue to maintain its ambitions for promotion.

However, the start into the second half of the season was rather moderate, with two wins and two defeats, one draw and nine points behind the top, it was clear early in the second half that FCW would no longer play for promotion. This balance did not improve afterwards either, so that the gap increased to 15 points by the halfway point of the second half of the season, even if they were able to regain third place against the even weaker FC Wil.

The FCW was able to hold third place until the end of the second half of the season (or even 2nd place if you take away the later rival AC Bellinzona ), but the Landbote also said at the end of the season that the FCW of the Super League ultimately did not Has come one step closer - the last quarter of the championship was, according to Landbote, "no longer in the green". According to the individual criticism of the country messenger Patrick Bengondo , who scored many decisive goals for himself and showed a “good work ethic”, he was awarded a 5.5 in the preliminary round, just like Lüscher. No player was rated unsatisfactory.
