This article is about FC Winterthur in the 2014/15 season . FC Winterthur reached 4th place in the Challenge League this season and was eliminated in the 2nd round of the Swiss Cup against the reigning Swiss champions FC Basel .

Season course

New signing Sead Hajrović in September at a game for the Bosnia and Herzegovina U21 national team

preparation

The most important event in the preparation was only certain two weeks before the championship start, although the change of coach had been announced for some time: After five years and the bad previous season, coach Boro Kuzmanovic was dismissed and a new coach, Jürgen Seeberger, was hired. In his last job in Switzerland, the German led FC Schaffhausen from the third-highest league to the Super League . He was last unemployed after SV Darmstadt 98 separated from him in December 2012 after half a year.

On the transfer front it was already clear in May that, for example, central defender Sead Hajrović , brother of Izet Hajrovic , would switch from GC to FCW. Other important commitments were João Paiva , who was Wohlens' top scorer last season, and Dennis Iapichino from FC Basel as second center-back . For the goalkeepers, there was a kind of swap between FCW and FC Thun : While Christian Leite is leaving FCW for the Bernese Oberland, the previous second goalkeeper David Moser comes to Winterthur on loan. The best-known finish is that of 33-year-old Sawas Exouzidis , who could no longer find a place in the rejuvenated Seeberger team. Also left Kristian Kuzmanovic the club towards Vaduz, after his father had been released. In the preparatory games, FC Winterthur did not have a bad record against very strong opponents: three wins against Grasshopper-Club Zürich , FC Tuggen and SC Freiburg , two defeats against FC Luzern , BSC Young Boys and two draws against SSV Jahn Regensburg and FC Zurich .

First round

The first half of the season started for Winterthur on July 21 in the Schützenwiese against FC Wil, which could only hold around 5,000 spectators due to the renovation of the opposite stand . The 4-0 win against Wiler was the beginning of a first good third of the championship for FC Winterthur: By the end of September, six of ten games had been won and only three were defeats. FC Winterthur was in second place at that time, five points behind the surprising leader FC Wohlen . After that, however, the team slackened slightly and the maximum number of points could only be booked twice from the remaining eight games of the first half of the season, which increased the gap to the top to 9 points by the half-time break, the club wintered in 4th place, a promotion candidate Winterthur were no longer after the second half of the first half of the season. Despite everything, a stronger preliminary round than last year can be recorded and a good first impression of the coach, in the individual review of the Landbote , Captain Patrick Bengondo emerged, who was involved in every second goal.

Second half

The preparation for the second half of the season began for FCW, like every year, with an appearance at the Hallenmasters , where he lost the final against FC Schaffhausen 3: 7. The rest of the preparation went smoothly with wins against YF Juventus Zurich , FC Tuggen and TSV Havelse , defeats against FC St. Gallen and FC St. Pauli (in Belek, Turkey) as well as a draw against Grasshoppers and Ruch Chorzów from Poland. What was remarkable was the first goal by St. Pauli against Winterthur, which fell after just 5 seconds from a long-range shot from the center line. In addition, FCW was able to record two new arrivals with Christian Fassnacht from FC Tuggen and Marco Trachsel, there were no departures during the winter break. In addition, with Urs Wolfensberger, a new assistant coach came to the Schützenwiese.

In the second half of the season, the FCW started less well than in the first half of the season. The first seven games were up and down with three wins, two losses and one draw. After that, however, the FCW collapsed and he only picked up a single point in the following six games - the Winterthur-based company last got a worse result in the 2003/04 season. Although the FCW was even able to hold the place despite this winless phase, the gap to the leader increased from 11 to 33 points and he lost the connection to the extended top group. The 14 points from the last six games didn't help to correct this slump either.

The FCW finally finished the season with 53 points in 4th place - 21 points behind newly promoted Lugano. The Landbote finally reported a “decent season” for the FCW, but once again missed the “necessary winner mentality”. What was remarkable about the 2014/15 season was the strength at home and at the same time away weakness of FCW: While he was the second-best team in the home table four points behind newly promoted Lugano, he was on the contrary the second-worst team in the league away, with just one point more than the bottom of the table FC Biel , but thanks to a license withdrawal from Servette Geneva , they do not have to relegate.
