This article is about FC Winterthur in the 2013/14 season . FC Winterthur reached 6th place in the Challenge League this season and was eliminated in the first round of the Swiss Cup against SC Brühl St. Gallen .

Season course

preparation

With the full-back Simon Grether , who replaces Nick von Niederhäusern, who has migrated to FC Vaduz , and the defender Patrik Baumann , who recently had no club , the FCW started preparing for the 2013/14 season. Patrik Baumann can be seen as a replacement for Beg Ferati , who said goodbye to Sion after half a season at Winterthur . Another newcomer was Gianluca D'Angelo , a defensive midfielder for AC Bellinzona who will also attract attention at FCW because of his well-known toughness. Striker Antonio Marchesano was also signed by the bankrupt Bellinzona . The last new signing is Davide D'Acunto , also a defensive midfielder from FC Schaffhausen. Goalkeeper Sascha Studer is returning to Schützenwiese after a year on loan. The test match record in the preparations was not bad, in the main rehearsal against the BSC Young Boys in Bern, the club achieved a 1: 1.

Regarding the season's goal, the Landbote wrote before the first game that this could actually be “just the promotion”. This goal was formulated accordingly by offensive player Patrick Bengondo as well as by coach Boro Kuzmanovic at the end of last season. Of the regular players from last season, only Beg Ferati left the club, but compared to last season Winterthur had more opportunities on the defensive.

First round

FC Winterthur started the new season with two defeats and could not meet the high expectations in advance. After four games and six points, the team was still too “shaky” and fragile, according to coach Kuzmanovic, and according to Landbote the team lacked the “stability of a top team”. In keeping with this record, FCW also retired early from the Swiss Cup in the first round against SC Brühl St. Gallen . In the remainder of the first half of the season, the FCW did not get on their feet either and joined the midfield, where they finished the first half of the season in 5th place. After 18 games, Winterthur was 11 points behind table leader FC Vaduz .

In the end, the Landbote gave the FCW a “messed up” first round. In the individual criticism of the Landbote, Christian Leite , in particular, did poorly, who was unable to start the season after an injury break. However, Luca Radice and Marco Aratore , who was referred to as “players in the preliminary round”, were given good marks.

Second half

The second half of the season began with the Hallenmasters 2014 , which FCW finished in 3rd place after a 7-0 win against FC Aarau . As a major departure, Luca Radice left FC Winterthur after more than seven years, he had received an offer from Aarau. On the other hand, Jonas Elmer has returned from Toronto, who only made three appearances there. Other commitments during the winter break included defender Paulinho , who was previously without a club , Fabian Ritter from FC Basel as a potential replacement for Radice and striker and former GC junior Genc Krasniqi . The preparation was rather mediocre with a 0: 3 or 0: 4 defeat against GC and Erzgebirge Aue. Coach Kuzmanovic also said that he was “more satisfied after a preparation”.

The FCW started the second half of the season with four points from four games. Remo Freuler's departure became known after the start of the second half of the season and he left FCW for Lucerne. For this, the Winterthur-based company signed the two midfielders Tunahan Çiçek (previously without a club) and Amin Tighazoui (from Vaduz) until the end of February . The second half of the season did not get any better for FCW with its duration, with just two wins and eight draws and eight defeats, the balance of the second half of the season was miserable. In the end, the Landbote reported a “year of clear regression” and repeatedly asked the coach question - the FCW showed its worst half-year to date in the five years under the coach's leadership. The coaching question mentioned should only be clarified relatively late in the preparation for the new season . The best player in the individual rating of the Landbote, Marco Aratore , will leave the FCW for St. Gallen for the new season.
