This article is about FC Winterthur in the 2018/19 season . FC Winterthur is playing in the Challenge League this season and, unlike the previous seasons, played a good season until the winter break and winters in 2nd place, which for the first time this season entitles them to participate in barrage games against the ninth place in the Super League would. However, the team was unable to hold onto second place and lost contact to the Barrageplatz, especially in the last quarter of the championship. In the Swiss Cup , it was eliminated in the round of 16 for the fourth time within six seasons against FC Basel . As in the previous season, the club is still without a president this season.

Season course

preparation

For the new 2018/19 season, FC Winterthur had to compensate for some departures. Back in April, two major newcomers were announced with the two returnees Davide Callà (midfielder) from FC Basel and Sead Hajrović (defender) from FC Wohlen, with Callà in particular being brought in as a leading player. Just in time for the last matchday of the old season, the new coach Ralf Loose was announced as the successor to Livio Bordoli . Loose last worked until 2015 as coach of the German third division team Preussen Münster . Raphael Spiegel , who was most recently a substitute goalkeeper under contract with the Portuguese first division club Boavista Porto , was hired to replace Matthias Minder , who was migrating to Neuchâtel Xamax . The former junior and central defender Granit Lekaj from FC Wil is returning to Schützenwiese as a returnee . The two young players Enrique Wild (left defender) and Bojan Milosavljevic have also signed two-year contracts as the third goalie. The midfield is reinforced on loan by the offensively oriented Roberto Alves from GC and the more defensive Remo Arnold from FC Luzern. On the offensive, where the departure of the previous top scorer Silvio to FC Wil has to be compensated, Jordan Gele from the B-squad of FC Nantes and Taulant Seferi , who comes on loan from the Young Boys, were signed up. The transfer policy was judged by the Landbote to the effect that predominantly players were brought in to make the team “more stable, more constant and mentally stronger”.

FCW started the preparatory games with a 1: 3 defeat against FC Luzern and then won the Freiämtercup with victories against FC Wohlen (5: 0) and FC Aarau (4: 3). On July 9, 3,500 spectators saw a 3-2 home win for Winterthur against the Premier League club West Ham United , which, however, did not appear in the best line-up and with a training deficit on the Schützenwiese. The team then flew to Manchester to pay a revenge visit to FC United of Manchester after two games on Schützenwiese , although the 1-1 draw against the sixth-rate amateur team that resulted from a fierce match was less satisfactory than the result against West Ham a few days earlier. Incidentally, the game was the first game in the club's history in the British Isles to be played in full - in 1959 a game in Sunderland had to be abandoned due to fog.

First round

Before the start of the season, Loose set the standard with a view to the past season at clubs such as Kriens, Chiasso or Rapperswil-Jona, which tend to be among the relegation candidates. According to Loose, the team also consisted of players who played poorly last season and must first grow together. On the part of the club, the sporting director Oliver Kaiser as well as managing director Andreas Mösli demanded that FCW should not have anything to do with relegation this season. According to Kaiser, the goal is a place in the secured midfield. In his article at the start of the season, the Landbote called for a season “that simply has to be better” and assisted the team with more personality and a defense that should be more stable.

The FCW lost the opening game against Wil 2-0, but already showed in the upcoming games with wins against FC Aarau (3-1) and Rapperswil-Jona (4-0) that the team was better positioned than last Season. After a good first quarter of the championship, the FCW was able to show 14 points after nine games in fourth place. In the relatively balanced league he was four points behind the leader FC Wil. It was the sixth-best championship quarter of the FCW since the introduction of the ten league in 2010. In the Swiss Cup, however, Winterthur, after victories against Greifensee and AC Bellinzona , defeated FC Basel again 0: 1 on October 31, despite a satisfactory performance give. Before the cup match, there was a friendly match between “FC Winterthur Brühlgut”, an official FCW team for people with mental disabilities , established five months ago in collaboration with the Brühlgut Foundation, against the “FC Basel Dream Team”.

In the league, the FCW continued to do well in the second quarter of the championship and in rounds 12 and 13 they were tied with Leader Servette Geneva in third and second place respectively. In the following two direct duels with the two favorites for promotion from Lac Leman , Lausanne and Geneva, the Winterthur-based company could not confirm their performance after two clear defeats and in particular had to let Leader Geneva at the top of the table pull again. After that, Winterthur was able to catch up again and closed the first half of the season with two wins after deficit against the two relegation candidates Kriens and Chiasso and a 0-0 draw against the then table runner-up Wil.

As a result of these results, Winterthur was able to finish the first half of the season as the leader of a group of three chasing packs six points behind Leader Servette FC in second place, which this season entitles them to participate in two barrage games for the first time. With 31 points and a goal difference of 29:26, Winterthur was able to record its best first half result since the introduction of the 10er league in its first half of the year under coach Ralf Loose. Last season, the club only scored one point more for the entire season.
