Davide Callà (born October 6, 1984 in Winterthur ) is a Swiss - Italian football player . The offensive midfielder has been under contract with FC Winterthur since July 1, 2018 .

Club career

Youth football

Callà began his football career as a junior at the Winterthur district club FC Tössfeld . His talent was recognized early on and he was trained at all three major clubs in the Canton of Zurich . First at FC Zurich , then at the Grasshopper Club Zurich and finally at FC Winterthur .

Frauenfeld, Wil

Callà made the leap to a professional after joining FC Frauenfeld in the meantime with the then Super League club FC Wil , where he celebrated his first major success in 2004 with a sensational cup win over his former youth club, the Grasshopper Club Zurich, at the age of 19.

Servette, St. Gallen, Grasshoppers

After the relegation of FC Wil to the Challenge League in the same year Callà was under contract with the then Super League club Servette FC , which went bankrupt six months later. That is why he moved to FC St. Gallen during the winter break of the 2004/05 season . The cruciate ligament rupture in 2007 was a turning point in his career . Since then Callà has struggled with recurring injuries. In 2008 he joined the Grasshopper Club Zurich again .

Aarau

After being no longer counted on him due to injuries at Grasshoppers, he moved to FC Aarau in 2012 , where he quickly matured into a key player. In the 2012/13 season, with his sixteen goals, he played a key role in the promotion of FC Aarau from the Challenge League to the Super League . He switched to FC Basel in exchange with Stephan Andrist , and Andrist in turn joined FC Aarau.

Basel

On February 11, 2014 it was announced that the two clubs FC Basel and FC Aarau had agreed to swap the players Callà and Stephan Andrist with immediate effect. It was rumored that FC Basel had paid FC Aarau an additional 500,000 Swiss francs for this trade . Callà made his debut for FC Basel on February 15, 2014 at St. Jakob-Park in a 1–0 home win against FC Sion .

The 2014/15 season was very successful for Callà and FCB. The team finished the football championship 2014/15 for the 18th time as champions with 12 points ahead of 2nd placed BSC Young Boys and 25 points ahead of 3rd placed FC Zurich . Basel was in the final of the Swiss Cup , which was lost to FC Sion 0-3. In the 2014/15 Champions League season , Basel advanced to the round of 16. During the 2014/15 season, FC Basel played a total of 65 games (36 championship, 6 cups, 8 Champions League and 15 test games). Under the new coach Paulo Sousa , Callà had a total of 49 appearances, including 23 in the Super League, 6 in the Cup, 5 in the Champions League and in all 15 in test matches. He scored 8 goals, 7 of them in the Super League.

Under coach Urs Fischer , Callà won the championship title with FCB at the end of the 2015/16 championship and the 2016/17 championship . For the club it was the 8th title in a row and the 20th title in the club's history. They also won the cup competition on May 25, 2017 with three to zero against Sion and thus the double . In the 2017/18 season he only came to a few short appearances and was sorted out by coach Raphael Wicky during the winter break .
