This article is about FC Winterthur in the 2010/11 season . FC Winterthur finished this season in 13th place in the Challenge League and was eliminated from the Swiss Cup in the second round against the equal-class FC Wohlen .

Season course

preparation

Even before training began, it was clear that four Winterthur players were leaving the Grasshoppers : On the one hand, Amir Abrashi and Ermir Lenjani left FCW on loan and, on the other hand, Innocent Emeghara and U21 player Remo Freuler were definitely transferred to the Zurich team. In addition to several young players, Winterthur was able to move in as midfielder Nico Thüring from SC Kriens and Pasquale Sbarra from APEP Pitsilia . In addition, goalie Christian Leite returned to FC Winterthur from his loan from FC Gossau. The balance of the test matches was with defeats against the Super League clubs FC St. Gallen (2: 4), YB (2: 4), AC Bellinzona (1: 4) and a game over half the duration in the Zürcher Oberland Cup against GC (0: 1) rather mixed. Winterthur was able to show a “good and hard-working game” in its 2-2 win against the Egyptian series champions Zamalek Kairo , winning a friendly against the first division club YF Juventus Zurich and the final rehearsal against the equal-class FC Schaffhausen 4-1. The Landbote assessed the FCW overall as “calm preparation with good performance”.

First round

Despite the loss of three regular players to GC, coach Kuzmanovic was confident that FCW could continue to play at the previous year's level and even saw FCW as better than last. Even the Landbote formulated as a target for the new season that FCW should again play up front in order to the last good performances of the previous season to tie.

The winning streak from the previous season could not be confirmed in the first two games with defeats against Lausanne, which was also convincing in the Europa League qualification at the time, and against SC Kriens . After that, however, the alleged false start with three wins in a row could be corrected for the time being, but the positive balance did not last in the following games and a lack of consistency of the team became apparent. In mid-September, Newton Ben Katanha (FC Wettswil-Bonstetten) was an additional reinforcement for the storm at FCW after Rainer Bieli and Goran Antic fell short of expectations. At the beginning of October, after two further draws and two defeats, the FCW settled in 11th place with only three points reserve on the relegation places. Winterthur did not go any better in the Cup either, after Winterthur had to go into extra time against FC Freienbach, a month later they were promoted 1: 5 from the Cup by FC Wohlen.

Until December nothing changed in the championship: The FCW finished a preliminary round that was "never constant, never stable" according to Landbote with a total of 18 points in 11th place with a lead of eight points on the relegation places. In the half-time analysis of the Landbote, a misjudgment was also located with coach Kuzmanovic, who had classified his teams as equally strong as last season despite several departures and also showed a less happy hand on the transfer market compared to the previous year. In the individual review of the Landbote, Stefan Iten was chosen as the best player of the first half of the season with a 5. Reflecting the mediocre performance of the preliminary round, however, four players were rated with a clearly unsatisfactory school grade of 3: Luca Radice , Michel Sprunger , Goran Antic and goalkeeper Vaso Vasic , who had lost his position as the goalkeeper after just two games. Three other players were also rated with an unsatisfactory 3-4.

During the winter break, the winning project “Das Runde muss ins Eckige” for the expansion of the Schützenwiese was presented, which prevailed against 29 competitors. With the staggered expansion of the Schützenwiese provided for in the project, a complete expansion of the stadium can be dispensed with in order to make it suitable for the Super League. In the final stage, according to the project by architects Sollberger Bögli, the stadium would have around 10,300 seats, of which 3,300 would be standing. Following the publication of the winning project, the association's priority was the implementation of the opposite stand as the first stage for an estimated cost of CHF 12.8 million, which was finally built in 2015.

Second half

As usual, FC Winterthur had its first public appearance at the Hallenmasters in the Deutweg ice rink , and in the fifth edition of the tournament, Winterthur finished second after losing to FC Luzern in the final . Test matches were against Grasshoppers U21 (4: 2), FC Aarau (0: 2), BSC Young Boys (1: 1) and in the training camp in Side in southern Turkey against the Norwegian first division club Brann Bergen (0: 2), the Bulgarian First division club FC Chernomorets Burgas (1: 1) and the Bosnian first division club FC Sarajevo (3: 1). The main rehearsal against FC Schaffhausen ended in a 2-2 draw. Looking back on the test matches, coach Kuzmanovic said that “a different team” was at work than in autumn.

On the transfer front, FCW was able to sign the veteran and central defender Daniel Sereinig , who most recently played in the second team of SC Freiburg . As a reinforcement in the storm Murat Ural was signed on loan from St. Gallen and from the Grasshoppers Ermir Lenjani returned to Winterthur after the loan ended . Instead, Mattias Schnorf, a long-time FCW player, broke his contract after two games in order to continue his career with a trip to the USA.

In the second round preview, the Landbote headlined that a clear increase was required. In particular, a false start like in the first half of the season should be avoided. However, the FCW could not meet this requirement with a 1: 2 defeat against Chiasso and a 1: 1 draw against FC Wohlen, each with a goal in the 92nd minute. After another 0-0 draw, the first three of the second half of the season followed in the fourth game against SR Delémont. The situation did not improve afterwards either, so that the FCW found themselves in the relegation battle no later than mid-April after a home defeat against bottom of the table Yverdon. The lead over the penultimate place had melted to only three points by then. After this defeat he was able to get some air for a short time with his second win in the second half of the season against Lugano, but was thrown back by a subsequent defeat against FC Locarno, which was also in danger of relegation. Under the impression of the poor performance, the coaching discussion flared up again in Winterthur and although Kuzmanovic had already announced his resignation to the president in the event of a subsequent defeat, Hannes W. Keller kept him in office. This paid off insofar as the team was able to secure their relegation one lap before the end with a fall back goal from Rainer Bieli - but not as late as in seven years. In the entire second half of the season, Winterthur was only able to record two wins and eleven points.

In accordance with the course of the season, the Landbote's balance sheet was also at the end of the day, who stated that the FCW had simply "messed up" this season. With regard to his season goal, coach Kuzmanovic also stated at the end of the season that this was “justified” in view of the team and that this could not be achieved due to “deficiencies in the character composition” and because “top performers did not function”. In their individual evaluation, the Landbote gave less than half of the players a sufficient grade. The best rated with a 4–5 each were the defender and leading player Daniel Sereinig , who joined the team in the second half, and striker Kris Kuzmanovic . At the other end of the scale were Vaso Vasic , Dominik Ritter , Luca Zuffi and Rainer Bieli , who were only given a 3.
