Marco Mathys (born July 5, 1987 ) is a Swiss football player who was most recently under contract with FC Vaduz in the Challenge League .
Career
Marco Mathys started his career at SC Derendingen. In 2006 he moved to FC Concordia Basel in the Challenge League . Three years later, he moved within the league to FC Biel , where he became a high performer as a dangerous midfielder. At the beginning of 2012, the then front runner of the Challenge League, FC St. Gallen, signed Marco Mathys. In contrast to FC Biel, where he mainly played in the central midfield, he was mainly used in the right midfield at FC St. Gallen.
After the successful promotion he made his debut on the first day of play at home against BSC Young Boys in the Raiffeisen Super League. He scored his first goals in the top division in the away game in Sion when he managed a brace. Shortly thereafter, Marco Mathys received a squad for the Swiss national football team , but was not used. With FC St. Gallen he surprisingly reached third place at the end of the season and thus qualified for the UEFA Europa League .
In the following season Marco Mathys replaced the top scorer Oscar Scarione , who had left St. Gallen, in his role as hanging tip . In the play-off first leg for the Europa League, Mathys scored the goal against Spartak Moscow to make it 1-1. After successfully qualifying for the group stage, he also scored in the home games against FK Kuban Krasnodar to 2-0 and against Swansea City to 1-0. At the beginning of 2014, Mathys prematurely extended his contract with FC St. Gallen until 2016.
After a coach change in September 2015, Mathys was no longer the first choice under Josef Zinnbauer and was only rarely used. For the 2016/17 season, Marco Mathys moved to FC Vaduz within the Super League .
