This article is about FC Winterthur in the 2015/16 season . FC Winterthur played a solid season in the Challenge League this season , which he finished in 6th place and reached the second round in the Swiss Cup .

Season course

preparation

The new season began for FC Winterthur with a kind of bang: long-time president Hannes W. Keller announced his resignation. He brought FC Winterthur out of a financial crisis in 2001 and has supported it financially ever since. He will cover the club's deficit for two seasons, after which the FCW will have to stand financially on its own two feet.

In terms of sport, the FCW started the preparations for the season with two new acquisitions, on the one hand with goalkeeper David von Ballmoos , who comes from the BSC Young Boys U21 team , and on the other hand with defensive midfielder Marco Mangold from Thun, after the start of training the loan of Claudio Holenstein from FC Luzern announced - most recently he was in action at FC Wohlen. The new captain is Patrick Bengondo after Stefan Iten resigned at the end of last season. FC Winterthur played the first four preparatory games against the Promotion League club YF Juventus Zurich (1-1 draw) and against the three higher-class clubs FC Zurich (lost 1: 2), Grasshopper Zurich (lost 3: 4) and FC Luzern (Lost 0-3). A game against FC St. Pauli , which FCW welcomed in front of a large crowd in 2011 and 2012, concluded the rather mixed preparation . On a hot summer day, 4,300 spectators saw a 0-1 defeat for Winterthur against the Hamburg “Kultverein”.

First round

Regarding FCW's season goal, Der Landbote said that FCW should “simply get better” compared to last season, the team should find more consistency. However, the FCW did not meet this goal, he started the new season rather badly with two defeats and one draw before he achieved his first two wins. At the end of August, FCW could only score eight points after seven rounds and were thus only two points ahead of the bottom of the table Aarau. In the starting phase of the championship, the team was reinforced by the newcomers Guillame Katz , long-time defender of Lausanne-Sport , and midfielder Musa Araz , the captain of the U21 national team. The latter was on loan from Basel and last played for FC Le Mont-sur-Lausanne .

In the following rounds, too, the FCW was never able to distance itself far from the bottom of the table in terms of points; the constant performance sought was missing. When the FCW slipped to the penultimate place in the tightly packed midfield after two defeats in a row in the 16th round, the club management drew the consequences and dismissed coach Jürgen Seeberger . The coach of the U21 team, Dario Zuffi , and the U18 coach Umberto Romano have been appointed as interim coach for the last two games until the winter break . Under the leadership of the interim duo, the FCW was able to win the last two games and end the first half of the season with 25 points and an even win and loss ratio with four draws in third place.

With that, the FCW said goodbye to the winter break with a gap of 7 points to the end of the table. With 11 points behind the league leaders Lausanne-Sports, the FCW could not reduce the gap to the top of the table, contrary to its own goals, compared to last season. The unsatisfactory first half of the season was also reflected in the player rating of the Landbote, who gave none of the players a school grade of over 4-5.

Second half

Before the turn of the year, FC Winterthur announced the signing of the new coach Sven Christ . The preparation for the second half of the season traditionally started for the FCW at the beginning of January at the last Hallenmasters edition in the Deutweg ice rink . Perhaps the last edition of the tournament, the FCW finished in 3rd place and, according to Landbote, showed a "decent performance". For financial reasons, the club decided not to hold a training camp in Turkey for the first time in a decade and, after no opponent could be found for a training camp in Ticino, only held one team event in Montafon, Austria . In terms of results, the preparation was also better, the first three test matches against third-class teams were all won, only the final rehearsal against the Super League team was lost. The only thing to be reported on the transfer front was that Ramon Cecchini was loaned by FC Vaduz until the end of the season.

Also in the second half of the season the FCW could not shine, it could not present a constant performance and played the whole second half in the midfield of the league. Even after the disqualification of FC Biel with subsequent bankruptcy, the championship was hardly exciting anymore, as the two games of the Zealanders were canceled in the second half of the season and the relegated party was already determined. At the end of the season, FC Winterthur had 43 points from 34 games, including 18 points in the second half of the season. In the last game Patrick Bengondo was bid farewell, the striker was a crowd favorite on the Schützenwiese. Ramon Cecchini , Claudio Holenstein , Marco Köfler , Musa Araz and Christian Fassnacht are also leaving the club . Regarding the season analysis, it can be said that the FCW also in the second half of the season, according to a fan blog, “did not meet expectations across the board” and missed the consistency they were looking for. According to Landbote and the new coach's statement, a “change” was necessary in order to find a way back to a winning mentality.
