The Stadio di Cornaredo (full name: Stadio comunale di Cornaredo ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Cornaredo district of the Swiss city ​​of Lugano in the canton of Ticino . It is mainly used for football games and serves as the home ground of the football club FC Lugano .

history

The stadium was built in 1951 and inaugurated with a game between FC Lugano and FC Chiasso (7-0). On November 25 of that year, the Nati played their first international match against Italy in front of 32,500 fans at the Stadio di Cornaredo. During the Football World Cup in 1954 , the group match between Italy and Belgium was played here. In June 2009 an international athletics meeting took place for the eighth time.

The total capacity was 15,000 spectators. Of these, 5,000 were seated and 10,000 were standing. The playing area consists of natural grass . After FC Lugano was promoted to the Super League in 2015, the city and the club adapted the venue to the safety standards of the Swiss Football League . The capacity was reduced from 10,500 to 6,330 visitors.
