Simon Grether (born May 20, 1992 in Friborg ) is a Swiss football player who has been under contract with FC Luzern in the Swiss Super League since summer 2016 .

Career

Grether began playing football with the FC Reinach youth team and switched to the FC Basel youth team in the summer of 2006 . Among other things, he played in the Basel U-18 team and became Swiss U-18 champion in 2009/10. He still played with the U-21 team in the first division. Grether signed his first professional contract on May 24, 2012 and made his debut on July 13, 2012 as a substitute during the 1-0 away win against Servette . He made his UEFA Champions League debut on July 24, 2012 against Flora Tallinn when Basel won 3-0. In January 2013, Grether was loaned to AC Bellinzona for six months . In summer 2013 it was awarded to FC Winterthur for a further year until the end of June 2014 .

In summer 2014 Grether moved to FC Wohlen where he played until summer 2016.

In June 2016 he moved to FC Luzern in the Super League, where he signed a contract until the end of June 2018 with an option for another year. In April 2018, after his twentieth season appearance, the contract was automatically extended to the end of June 2019. His only goal to date in the Super League was on April 22, 2018 when he scored a 2-1 winner against FC Zurich in the 93rd minute netted. On December 18, 2018, FC Luzern and Grether extended their contract prematurely until the end of June 2020. Simon Grether and FC Luzern extended the contract for another two years on August 12, 2020 until the end of June 2022.

National team

He had his first international match in the Swiss U-18 team on the day before his 18th birthday on May 19, 2010. The team won 2-0 against Ukraine . He played his first Switzerland U-19 international on September 4, 2010 in a 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic . He made his U-20 debut on August 31, 2011 in a 3-2 home win over Italy .

He completed a game for the Swiss U-21 team in February 2013 . He made his debut on February 6th at the Estadio El Madrigal in Villarreal , in the 1-0 loss to the Slovak selection .
