Federico Almerares (born May 2, 1985 in Mar del Plata , Argentina ) is an Argentine - Italian football player .
Career
The center forward Almerares initially played for Quilmes AC . He joined River Plate in 2003 at the age of 18, where he was part of the first team squad along with the future goalkeeper of FC Basel Franco Costanzo and occasionally also played in the Primera División Argentina. A transfer to Basel became possible because Almerares no longer wanted to extend his contract with River Plate after his previous contract expired at the end of 2007.
The 23-year-old Almerares signed a three-year contract with FC Basel on August 7, 2008, which was valid until June 30, 2011. In the 2008/09 season he was the only one who played a league game. In the 2009/2010 season he played 26 times, but since he was only striker number three behind Alexander Frei and Marco Streller , the club allowed a change.
On January 31, 2011 Almerares moved to Neuchâtel Xamax , but where he was dismissed after the second game of the 2011/12 season for lack of performance. On July 29, 2011 he went back to Argentina to join the newly promoted CA Belgrano .
