Ernst Dieter Berninghaus (born March 19, 1965 in Pulheim , North Rhine-Westphalia ) is a German - Swiss manager.

Life

After studying economics doctorate Berninghaus 1990 at the University of Cologne Dr. rer. pole. In 1991 he began his career in the board of management of Metro Holding AG in Baar / Zug, Switzerland. In the course of Metro AG's IPO , he headed the internationalization and corporate policy of Metro AG for several years. He was also a member of the supervisory board of the subsidiaries Real, Massa , Extra and Tip.

In 1999, Berninghaus moved to the management of Rewe Zentral AG and Rewe Zentralfinanz-eG Cologne. In 2001 he became a board member of Rewe with responsibility for international business and e-business. In doing so, he drove Rewe's expansion strategy to southern, central and eastern Europe. In 2003 he was elected to the Board of Directors for three years by the general assembly of the Swiss bank Vontobel Holding AG . As of May 2004, Berninghaus became chairman / CEO of Rewe Zentral-AG and Rewe Zentralfinanz-eG

As early as October 2004, Berninghaus had to resign as CEO of Rewe, as it became known that Berninghaus had received an illegal commission from the sellers in 2000 through the purchase of the internet company Nexum, where Berninghaus briefly sat on the supervisory board before joining Rewe of 6.5 million euros. Rewe took over 75.1 percent of the company's shares for 23.5 million euros. However, the company was almost worthless!

For this, Berninghaus was criminally sentenced by the Cologne district court to two years' imprisonment for serious infidelity. After a legal dispute, he reached an agreement under civil law with REWE.

Berninghaus then became a consultant to Migros boss Herbert Bollinger in Switzerland. In autumn 2007 he was also head of the Migros subsidiary Denner and was elected to the board of the Denner parent company Rast Holding and Denner AG . As a member of the Denner Board of Directors, he accompanies the takeover of Denner by the largest Swiss retailer Migros . After the takeover, Berninghaus became Chairman of the Board of Directors of Denner.

From February 2008 to March 2016, Berninghaus was a member of the General Management of the Federation of Migros Cooperatives (MGB) and head of the Commerce Department, which brings together 13 retail companies, including Denner, Globus , Interio , Office World , Migros, Ex Libris and Online Provider LeShop.ch .

After a longstanding relationship with the University of St. Gallen and its Institute for Retail Management as well as an activity as a guest speaker at Bachelor, Master and Executive level, Berninghaus has been a lecturer and lecturer on the subject of digital transformation since 2016 . Since February 2016, together with Thomas Rudolph and Felix Brunner, he has been offering a series of lectures on the subject of “Successful Management of Digital Transformation” in the Master’s degree.

Dieter Berninghaus joined the SIGNA Group's then four-person Group Executive Board Holding as Chairman on September 1, 2016 and at the same time assumed the role of Chairman of SIGNA Retail, the retail division of SIGNA. In these functions, Berninghaus accompanies the strategic development of the SIGNA Group as a whole and is specifically responsible for the retail business.
