LeShop.ch is an online supermarket and a subsidiary of the Migros Genossenschafts-Bund (MGB) , the second largest retail company in Switzerland.

Companies

The online supermarket sells 12,500 products via its internet platform, around half of which are Migros products. The remaining products are branded items including frozen foods and alcohol. With its partner, the Swiss Post , LeShop.ch delivers the purchases to your home and offers free deliveries to over one hundred so-called PickMup pick - up locations.

The company's headquarters are in Ecublens VD with four logistics centers in Ecublens, Bremgarten AG , Nebikon (LU) and Cheseaux (VD). In 2019, the company had a turnover of 190 million francs and employed 304 people. LeShop.ch has been a subsidiary of the Federation of Migros Cooperatives (MGB) since January 1, 2006.

history

1997 to 2003

LeShop.ch was founded in 1997 by the private entrepreneurs Alain Nicod, Jesús Martin Garcia, Rémi Walbaum and Christian Wanner. In April 1998, LeShop.ch was the first internet supermarket in Switzerland and one of the first in the world to start operating with an assortment of over 1,500 dry items. Home delivery was carried out in partnership with Swiss Post throughout Switzerland. In November 1998 LeShop.ch developed a cold chain for the delivery of fresh products and added fruit, vegetables, meat, etc. to its range.

In June 2000 the Bon appétit Group acquired 33.3% of the share capital of LeShop SA. At the same time, subsidiaries were founded in Germany and Argentina (both companies have since closed again). The co-founder Christian Wanner took over the management as CEO. After four months of construction, LeShop.ch opened the first distribution center in Bremgarten in August 2011. A partnership with Schweizer ExpressPost secured the logistics to the customers. In December 2002, the Bon appétit Group, as the main shareholder, announced the closure at the end of the year, but the private investor group ShoppingNet Holding SA and the management took over the company.

2004: takeover

In September 2003, LeShop.ch announced a strategic alliance with the Federation of Migros Cooperatives (MGB), initially without any equity participation. Migros closed its website migros-shop.ch and handed over the Migros product range and existing online customers to LeShop.ch in January 2004.

To 2012

The first quarter of 2006 resulted in the first profit in the company's history. The MGB took over 80% of the share capital of LeShop.ch and started an investment program for further growth. In October 2006, the second LeShop.ch logistics center was opened in Ecublens in the presence of Minister of Economic Affairs and Federal Councilor Doris Leuthard . The LeShop.ch headquarters were relocated to Ecublens VD. In November 2008, LeShop.ch exceeded the sales threshold of 100 million francs for the first time. In June 2009, the company became the first Swiss provider to ship frozen products. A reusable cool box with a dry ice element is used for this. Since January 2010 it has also been possible to shop at LeShop.ch via smartphone and its own iOS app. A range of wines has also been available since August 2011 thanks to the cooperation with Denner , another Migros subsidiary. An iPad application was introduced in June 2012. The proportion of sales via the mobile app grew rapidly. As of the end of September 2013, over a quarter of orders (27%) were being placed via smartphones or tablets.

New activities

Pick-up service by car from 2012 to 2017

Since October 2012, purchases previously made on the Internet via LeShop.ch can be loaded directly into the trunk of the car in a drive-in, the offer is called DRIVE. The concept in this version (on-site storage, order two hours before collection) is an innovation in the Swiss market. As a supplement, LeShop.ch Rail followed in December 2012 for rail travelers; the orders can be picked up at SBB train stations (initially Zurich and Lausanne). There were four innovations in the year. A second Drive pilot location was opened in Staufen in September. This means that “the service is available for the first time for all of central German-speaking Switzerland”. Organic products from the Alnatura line have also been available since 2014 . Another innovation was the Switzerland-wide daily delivery during office hours, for example in commercial buildings. The RAIL pilot project launched as a test with SBB was completed in 2014, and the findings were incorporated into further development.

LeShop.ch continued to grow and in 2014 sold groceries online for 165 million francs, an increase of 7 million francs, or 4.4% compared to 2013. The media rated the record turnover as “the online business is growing above average”. In 2015 sales grew by a further 6.6% to CHF 176 million.

Leshop.ch described the “PickMup” collection points opened in 2015 as a “pilot operation”, where customers can pick up their online orders themselves on the following day. With the significant expansion of the delivery and pick-up service, the drive-in locations in Studen and Staufen were closed on May 6, 2017, as the nearby PickMup pick-up points are available to customers. If LeShop.ch cannot find a new tenant, the rent will still be due every month until 2022. That is how long the lease for the drive-in store in Staufen continues.

In 2017, LeShop.ch slipped back to eighth place among the top-selling Swiss B2C online shops. In October 2017 it became known that LeShop.ch was considering changing its name because the Migros name was not in the focus. According to reports in April 2019, LeShop.ch - currently subordinate to the Commerce Department - will in future be subordinate to the Marketing Department.

Management and Board of Directors

At the end of September 2013, co-founder Christian Wanner handed over responsibility as CEO to long-standing sales and marketing director Dominique Locher (since 2000). In the role of Chief Organization Officer COO, the former Director of Finance and Human Resources, Sacha Herrmann, supports the new CEO in the management. Christian Wanner remains a member of the Board of Directors .

Urs Schumacher took over the management of LeShop.ch as CEO on August 1, 2017, replacing Dominique Locher. COO Sacha Herrmann left the online supermarket at the end of September 2017. In October 2017, the founder Christian Wanner also left the company. He was replaced on the board of directors by Digitec co-founder Florian Teuteberg.

On March 1, 2020, Katrin Tschannen took over the management of LeShop and “Migros Food Online”.

criticism

Migros offered certain products at LeShop.ch more expensive than in its own branches. In 2009 the consumer magazine K-Tipp found a price increase of 45% for a test purchase of 50 products. All Migros products are now available at LeShop.ch at the same prices as in a Migros supermarket. Exceptions are promotions and special offers: These take place independently of the Migros supermarkets.
