Herschmettlen is an outside guard for the community of Gossau ZH .
geography
Herschmettlen is located in the drumlin landscape of the Zurich Oberland . The moraine landscape has been characterized by moist, swampy soils since the glaciers retreated. At least until 1941 it is decided to drain the wet meadows and swamps. Today there is little left of the old natural landscape.
history
The Herschmettlen watch was first mentioned in a document in 1390. For centuries it has been the poorest watch in Gossau. Until well into the beginning of industrialization in the 18th century, their population consisted of small farmers, who mostly lived on the edge of their means of subsistence and farmed agriculture. When at the end of the 18th century the opportunity arose of spinning yarns and weaving cloths through home work and on behalf of large publishers, almost all non-farmers seized the opportunity to develop a better livelihood. Many farmers even give up farming entirely in order to concentrate on homework. When this collapsed around 1840 due to the increasing competition from the much more efficient factories, the economic crash in the village was enormous. Most of the residents subsequently leave the village to find new work and settlement opportunities in the surrounding area. Farmers from the Bernese Oberland move into the vacant farms and see this as a good opportunity to run dairy and cattle farming. As a result, the smallholder structure in Herschmettlen is replaced by larger farmsteads and the previously predominant agriculture is replaced by cattle farming; a development like everywhere in the community of Gossau, or in the Zurich Oberland.

Politically, Herschmettlen belongs as a watch to the Zurich Oberland community of Gossau ZH. Demographically, Herschmettlen remained fairly stable with around 300 inhabitants into the 21st century. This constancy resulted in the development of its own village identity, a committed village community whose culture is cultivated by the village association founded in 1969. Between 2003 and 2013, Herschmettlen experienced a relatively large population growth. During that period the population doubled from 300 to around 600 inhabitants.

Herschmettlen is developed through a partly very old network of roads and paths with Gossau ZH and the other four Gossauer Wachten. On the public transport of the ZVV (Zürcher Verkehrsverbund), Herschmettlen is connected to the Wetzikon train station by the VZO bus route 883.
economy
The Wacht is still economically influenced by agriculture.
